About Emsie Erastus

I am a Digital Rights Specialist at Internews, a leading international media development organisation. I have experience in conducting research and providing technical support on Digital Rights topics such as AI ethics, data protection, privacy, cybercrime, and cybersecurity in Africa.In my current role, I lead, develop, and implement activities to promote digital rights in Zambia, in collaboration with the project team, project partners, beneficiaries, and the Government of Zambia. I also design strategies and activities to align the digital laws in Zambia with international standards and frameworks. I hold an MSc in Media and Communications (with distinction) from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where I explored the governance and regulation of media and communication, including internet and digital platforms, telecommunications, political economy, regulation, and power. I was awarded the UK government’s prestigious Chevening Scholarship in 2019. My work is driven by my passion for advancing information integrity, autonomy and human rights, and ensuring that the digital space is respectful of fundamental human rights. My work has appeared on BBC, Democracy Now!, and Deutsche Welle.
