The WBFO Disabilities Beat looks at disability rights and access issues impacting people with disabilities both in our market area, Western New York and Southern Ontario, as well as the greater US and Canada. Unlike our Health and Wellness Desk, which looks at medical treatments, advancements in care and health equity, our Disabilities Desk looks at issues that impact the social quality of life and equity for people with disabilities, such as access to transportation, employment, education, independent living, caregiving and housing. We also look at disability as a cultural identity and report on representation, language and history. Investigative reporting on disability through a social lens allows us to ask what in our communities was not built with people with disabilities in mind, as well as what changes could allow people with disabilities to have equal access to every part of life. We have a commitment to covering disability in a way that is accurate, compassionate and responsive to the disability community's voice by following the National Center on Disability and Journalism style guide, which holds the most up to date language and guidance on reporting on disability, from people with disabilities. We also recognize that people with disabilities have been infantilized and stereotyped in the media, especially through "inspirational" content, so we are committed to telling stories that don't aim to "inspire" but instead aim to listen to the disability community and tell their stories with honesty and the intent to change real issues.

As an associate producer, I've been able to grow exponentially in my ability to report breaking news and learn how to report remotely. I feel very confident about my ability to enterprise stories using social media and sources, covering breaking news remotely, and creating social media posts that will pull new readers in. In this role, I've been able to learn from every aspect of our newsroom: I've filmed VOs, VOSOTs, conducted interviews, enterprised stories remotely, managed the weekend assignment/digital desk, covered local government, produced breaking news, wrote show scripts and more.

At AHR, I've been able to grow as an oral and visual storyteller, educator, and leader. AHR was part of my own education and inspired me to become a journalist as a high school student. As the Youth Outreach Coordinator at AHR, I had the privilege of helping tell the story of this organization, run programming, and document their events. In my role, I learned a lot about public speaking, often telling the anecdotal story of our organization, as well as my own story, at different events and functions that typically have between 50 and 300 people. Additionaly, I assist program directors during our week-long "Summer Symposium" for high school students, where we teach students about history, media literacy, civic engagement, and social justice. During this program, I often teach our "skill building" sessions which help students learn skills that they can use to network, do event planning, storytelling or other social justice work. Additionally, I typically help photograph most of our events and fundraisers.

I assisted the director and program director in the execution of our 2018 summer conference for high school/middle school students, led the parent ceremony, and taught a student group focused on public health. Since I was also a prior student and intern of the program, I also helped lead the interns. During the fall/winter/spring I will help with the promotion of the program as well as the 2019 program development.

WBFO helped me develop a stronger understanding of audio/radio journalism and gave me the opportunity to grow in my ability to write in a way that our listeners could connect with. I really loved that WBFO challenged me as a multimedia journalist and gave me opportunities to do videography and photography as well. I believe that my internship at WBFO helped strengthen my ability to write in a way that is concise and easy to understand, allowed me to get more experience with breaking news, and taught me new ways of doing visual and audio journalism. I felt I was challenged to, and able to, pitch creative ideas in news meetings every day that I was there. Additionally, when I first started pitching coronavirus story ideas (before we knew this would be a pandemic), I was encouraged to pursue them but also taught how to do remote reporting in case my safety would be a concern. I am very grateful that I had the chance to intern somewhere where I was also taught and encouraged to respect my own safety while still getting the story.

I was the Justice Intern for Canisius College's Office of Campus Ministry. I was responsible for leading a delegation of students to Washington, DC. for the Ignatian Family Teach-In and to Capitol Hill to speak with lawmakers. Additionally, I was responsible for helping plan events that focus on social justice issues as they relate to Jesuit social teaching.

I facilitated the operation of a 13 person editorial staff, and oversaw content and design. As managing editor, it was my role to be present and assist each section in any needs they have, make sure that everything was running smoothly, know and oversee overall content each week. I assisted the Editor in Chief with anything they needed, such as weekly page submission, website development, and budgets. As managing editor, I wrote each week for the news section, usually covering the undergraduate governing body and the college administration. Additionally, I also oversee design and work in collaboration with our Art Director to create page designs and layout the paper.

Journalism experience gained through the on-campus newspaper for Canisius College. I was a weekly writer for features and photographer for sports. When the opportunity provided itself, I also wrote sports stories, mainly game re-caps or player profiles. Every week I also contributed to the building of the paper, by using InDesign to put together the layout for the features section. I had been within the sports department since September 2016 and joined the features department and editorial/layout team in January 2017.

Under a three month contract I worked as a research assistant on a podcast, that is currently in production. The podcast focused on obscure Buffalo History so my job included following up on history myths, leads, and ideas and researching them through online catalogues, genealogy records, oral interviews and physical archives, such as the Grosvenor Room at the Buffalo and Erie County Central Library. I would use my research to create a report that pieces together an obscure story and ties it to a larger theme/current event.
