I heard someone talk about being comfortable with ambiguity, that’s me, I thought. So, how did I get here? Long ago, I joined the railways as a graduate with a degree in philosophy. At uni I expected coffee and conversation, but I got logic and critical thinking. Turned out that was great training for management, and I draw on it daily. At interview, I said my interests were strategy and IT, but my career has taken many turns seeing me work in and around ops, engineering, planning, reporting and corporate functions across rail and transport. I am a generalist with wide domain knowledge: I don’t know everything there is to know about rail, but if I don’t know, I do know who will know.I’m a systems thinker, and I’m all about working smarter. As a trainee, I did a Kepner-Tregoe course, I have Lean Six Sigma qualifications and I have headed Sydney Trains’ business and process improvement division. Theory is not enough; getting it done is critical; as I constantly reminded my LSS Black Belts, perfect is the enemy of good.I act as a translator speaking IT, operations, engineering, economics, legal and more. My ability to communicate across disciplines, helps me exert influence beyond my authority. A reputation for treating people with respect and delivering on my promises doesn’t hurt. When something needs to be done right and done on-time or when complex issues need to be presented simply, I am, as an old boss once said, a safe pair of hands. My wife laughs when I talk about ‘our’ trains or ‘our’ stations, but I’m passionate about what we do and the difference we make. Career highlights include:• being part of the team that planned and delivered rail transport for the Sydney Olympics, to international acclaim• leveraging the challenges of the Tcard project to develop the concept of operations for the game-changing Opal card and• driving introduction of visual management and balanced scorecards, improving transparency and accountability.Although an introvert, I find coaching and mentoring people the most rewarding part of my job. I’ve honed my leadership skills over the years, and I continue to learn. With my history, I am comfortable managing through change. I’ve reached a stage in life where I’m conscious of giving back. Among other things, this has seen me part of the transport’s Mardi Gras crew for the last six years, dancing as if no one is watching even while featuring on SBS’s 'Inside Central Station'.
