I am a researcher in Learning Sciences and Education Technology. My domain expertise is in STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), with focus on innovative approaches to science education. These include inquiry-based and project-based learning with interactive technologies, digital fabrication and maker spaces. I am particularly interested in Data Science Education as a bridge between STEM disciplines and CS. I have expertise in UX/UI design for learning technologies, inferential and Bayesian statistics, the design and execution of laboratory experiments, online experiments and classroom experiments, and curriculum design.

Project: Cloud-based Laboratories in Biology: I co-develop a web application with a remote laboratory of microscopes that allows students to run experiments, visualize the data, create and evaluate models in direct comparison with the real data. I conducted controlled experiments in middle school classroom and in online learning settings and applied machine learning to analyze process data. I am currently on extending the web app to integrate scientific experimentation, modeling and data analysis, and to employ the web app in middle school classrooms. 2. Project: Mechanistic Reasoning in Physics (with Carl Wieman): I co-designed a new two-week unit on electric circuits with high school teachers in Chicago to develop mechanistic reasoning. In a related project, I conducted clinical interviews with novice and expert Physicists to examine patterns of reasoning in Physics.3. Project: Technologies for Science Inquiry: I conducted multiple laboratory studies to examine how the design of virtual and physical science technology impacts inquiry-based learning. I further applied machine learning to analyze process data.4. Project: Learning Analytics in CS: I applied machine learning on log-data from homework of CS undergraduate students to examine whether students’ need for help can be detected in their process data.
