In October 2014, I established a consultancy offering freelance strategic communications and public affairs support and advice. Contracts included: • British pharmaceutical trade body, ABPI. I built a story and message house for the organisation and industry on behalf of the CEO; • Genus plc., a leading global animal genetics and healthcare company based in the UK. I completed a project to design a corporate affairs and communications function for the company. This included preparing the company, and strategic partners, for an announcement of a significant technological breakthrough in porcine healthcare using gene-editing technology.

I led media relations for part of the Cabinet Office charged with driving improvements in public sector commercial capability and activity. Responsibilities included establishing and managing a 24/7 reactive and proactive press office, managing pan-departmental media campaigns on efficiency, and developing strategic media and marketing campaigns to support business objectives. Successes included building strong relationships with key national and trade media and press teams across the public sector, and doubling positive media coverage year-on-year. I exceeded targets set and demonstrated how coverage led to supporting key business objectives. I also provided crisis management advice to very senior Government officials, including ministers, and additional communications direction across the full range of communications disciplines, deputising for the Director of Communications.

I led the public and community relations activity for BBC TV Licensing, including strategic development of the media relations campaign, courts relations, stakeholder communications and crisis management. Managing a team of ten external suppliers, I set and monitored measurable objectives for communications activity, and provided directional support. I also acted as an adviser on all TV Licensing marketing, ranging from direct marketing to advertising, and drove the internal publicity of the team’s work throughout the wider BBC. Prior to the promotion to this role in December 2002, I was a spokesman for the Corporation working in the corporate press office.

I developed and implemented communication strategies for the Department of Health in the Eastern Region. Acting as the main link between the NHS and Government, I provided regular briefing to ministers on regional activity. As a leader of the internal NHS communications regional network, I also handled reactive and proactive media relations for the Department. Working with the support and confidence of senior NHS staff and Department officials, ranging from the Deputy Chief Medical Officer to trust chief executives, I also managed special projects including a public health campaign aimed at primary school children, which celebrated over 150 years of public health legislation. In addition to this, I carried out a secondment as Private Secretary to the Minister of State for Health.

Following an internship with the European Commission, I was asked to stay on during and beyond the UK’s Presidency of the EU, as a press officer and communications consultant.
