The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives, reducing the burden of disease and strengthening integrated health systems in low- and middle-income countries where we work.More than 80 countries have access to CHAI-negotiated price reductions, vaccines, medical devices, and diagnostics. Current programs at CHAI include HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, Maternal, Newborn and Reproductive Health, Diarrhea and Pneumonia, Nutrition, Vaccines, Health Financing, Health Workforce, and Cancer.I joined CHAI in August 2020. For 24 years, I worked for GlaxoSmithKline, primarily in late phase inhaled product development and manufacturing. I led the CMC development, submission and approval of Advair HFA Inhalation Aerosol and a number of global products supporting life cycle maintenance of matured assets, such as Ventolin MDI. I am a colloid scientist by formal training and have been involved in a wide range of scientific and technical programs relating to understanding and controlling the behavior of particle-based products, including dry powders, liquid suspensions, emulsions and polymer solutions. In 2017, I took early retirement from GSK and started my own business providing experience-based consulting and educational services to clients involved in the development and manufacture of colloid-based products. Another aspect of my business drew upon a long track record in GSK of developing inexpensive analytical instruments to quantify critical quality attributes for which no existing methods were available. Most recently, I obtained a patent for measuring protein electrical charge in nanodispersions. My consulting experience has taught me skills I could not have learned in my earlier corporate position. It was fortuitous that I saw a post for my CHAI role and I realized the opportunity to use my experiences to help bring life saving medicines to those who lack the access that we take for granted.SKILLS• Complex project management including regulatory studies • Understanding and controlling robustness of pre- and post-market pharmaceutical products • Networking with internal and external partners • Deep interrogation and interpretation of complex datasets • Translating customer needs into tangible, measurable tasks • Creative problem solving, out-of-the-box thinking and innovation • Excellent technical and business communication • Expert physical chemist (doctorate)
