About Ensemble Español

The mission of the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater is to preserve, promote, and present the Flamenco, Folkloric, Classical, Escuela Bolera and Contemporary Dance and Music traditions of Spain which includes the exploration of the country's history and identifies its influence on Latin American art and heritage as living sources of cultural pride and education.Founded in 1974 by Dame Libby Komaiko, the Company was incorporated in 1976, and built an artistic residency program with Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU). Today, the Company is a critically acclaimed performance ensemble that has toured nationally and internationally, and is considered one of the city's most dynamic arts organizations.Through educational outreach that spans kindergarten to college-level students, the Company provides artistic residencies and creative partnerships that offer dance instruction to youth, presents lecture/demonstration and performance programs to school-age children, and offers meaningful scholarship opportunities to youth and adult company members.     Began with the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater while in college in 1984 as a student aide seeking employment to help cover my studies at Northeastern Illinois University where the Ensemble Español has been in residence since 1976 as a not for profit arts organization. One year later I auditioned for the company receiving scholarships and training as a professional company Spanish dancer touring and teaching all sectors of the company's programs. Later became the company's Administrative Director and recently Executive Director leading the company to the world stages as the center for Spanish dance and music in America. Expansion of the company includes the implementation and hiring of 4 full time Spanish dancers/teachers, 2 part time dancers/teachers, manager of operations, youth outreach director, director of development, expanding executive board of directors, fundraising committee, parents committee, individual donors, sponsors,partners, memberships, scholarship endowments and university community programs.
