On this contract with the State Department building a modern way to send flash messages, cables, and record emails and preserve them through Microsoft Outlook, I was in charge of maintaining key procedures for embassies, posts, and consulates cutting over to the new system, and maintaining a suite of "quick guides" that walked advocates and new users through key procedures so they could use the program successfully. I was tapped to write policy updates to the Foreign Affairs Handbook and the Foreign Affairs Manual. I also took over the task of writing detailed release notes for the customer. While it was an arduous task, I learned how important it is to advertise your successes to the customer, ensure they understand the value you're delivering, and seek their feedback to make the best products.

CompSci Resources marked the beginning of my foray into government contracting. I was in charge of all technical writing and training development support for a contract maintaining custom web applications for the Securities and Exchange Commission. I also supervised two junior technical writers. I learned about working with the government as a customer. Because contractors must be good stewards of tax dollars, there is more collaboration and providing insight into work being performed than one expects in a business-to-business environment. With much more empowering management at CompSci, I identified the need for and began an effort to consolidate and modernize the disparate documentation and training modules that supported these web applications. Unfortunately, our contract was the victim of SEC budget cuts, and I didn't see that work evolve further.

Micron began my time as a technical writer. Much like my time as a reporter, I forged relationships with people who had the content I needed to write operating and maintenance procedures for machines used in the process of fabricating semi-conductor microchips used in cell phones, computers, and imaging systems. I also led a project to create standard suites of documentation for tools new to the fab. Micron also helped me shape my own leadership style. I resolved to lead with vision and intent, empower any direct report I have to make good decisions, build them up towards their potential, and treat them as human beings who cannot perform without genuine work/life balance.

I was the "cops and courts" reporter for this daily newspaper that, at the time, had a circulation of about 45,000 readers. I mastered making my writing immediate, mechanical, clear, and concise, a skill I pride myself in to this day. I developed good relationships with regular sources and interviewees that generated compelling stories, some of who were people with whom the paper had strained relationships in the past. I also got a chance to mentor junior reporters and interns on their way to becoming stellar journalists. I also regularly appeared on partner TV news programs to discuss my stories and on local radio stations. In my short time as a journalist, I won two Virginia Press Association awards, one first place award for a series of news stories about a schizophrenic man on death row, and a third-place award I shared with coworkers for a retrospective series about early 1960s civil rights protests in Danville.
