Developed efficient flexible data models from internal specification, developer input, and customer feedback using a formal CASE tool. Translated these models into physical databases, then developed required stored procedures. The stored procedures were based on pattern design and designed to reduce the complexity of code in the VB layer above the database. The database had to relate customer data to volatile reference data at multiple points in time. Developed methods for code generation and automatic scripting of databases and data. Generated test data to support test scripts. Automated the generation of meaningful test data, and it’s archiving/restore in multiple test environments. I was also responsible for day to day maintenance of Windows 2000 server systems, networks, anti-virus, security, MS Exchange, backups – basically everything that goes into purchasing, installing, and maintaining all of the technology to support a 20 person strong development effort.

Initially engaged to develop and lead the Microsoft SQL Server build, deployment and maintenance strategy for a server farm supporting a variety of in-house and web fronted real-time applications. Mentored operations staff, co-developed operations procedures with a brief knowledge transfer to in-house DBA’s in order to move to another project.Translated the functional specifications and business requirements for a 25,000 user Intranet into efficient working data models, and then developing the core SQL and ASP routines. Extensive pattern analysis and design of DNA and COM+ code using VB. This required the integration of 4 discrete SQL V7 and SQL 2000 databases into a single SQL 2000 database and re-purposing over 350 stored procedures and packaging it for migration to an HR application utilising DTS. Large scale project to implement a digital TV platform providing email and Web access to support millions of potential consumers. Responsible for designing a highly resilient, zero points of failure, clustered SQL Server 2000 platform. Handed over to in-house and Microsoft Web TV team, together with detailed performance measurements and volumetric analyses

Stand in to meet a short term peak in workload brought about by extended holiday of AIT’s Lead Development DBA. Assumed responsibility for multi-project database design covering normalisation, query writing, index tuning and security audit across live, development and test platforms.

Crisis management. Recruited to solve a number of business critical SQL Server failures affecting front office trade capture applications. Carried out detailed design and re-development of standardised SQL Server installation routines, and operational procedures. Created and implemented a migration strategy for SQL 6.5 to SQL 7.0 server conversion and assisted the development effort, writing ASP routines behind SQL 7.0 database designs. Assisted developers with database design, query writing, stored procedures, and triggers from Visual Basic. Visual C++ and ASP front ends.

Reporting directly to the Programme Manager. Ambitious project designed to roll-out 4,500 workstations, 700+ servers to Going Places’ UK retail estate. Delivered the design & operational roll-out of a multi-tiered SQL 6.5 replication schedule (for Corporate Data refresh, all 710 shops), and automated the user creation and maintenance processes (20% staff turnover, 4,500 staff). Created the central server SQL topology for the support of a shop wide SQL based Intranet. Created an unattended SQL 6.5 installation as part of the overall server automated build, 100% shop installation rate over 3 months!. Devised the reporting mechanisms on the state of 700+ servers over an ATM based WAN, including SQL Mail, Alerting, SNMP agents, tape backups. Frequently seconded to GP’s third party software house to guide developers on SQL debugging and SQL related software releases. Carried out high level evaluation of SQL Server 7.0.

Developed a comprehensive suite of SQL server standards and procedures, including basic DB design guidelines, unattended installation scripts, and database population techniques. Formally handed over to in-house operational teams.

Rescue operation. Wrote corporate standards for SQL Server installation and operational support. Daily fault resolution including, connectivity, security, database corruption, performance tuning, guiding developers and thus introducing server and DB stability. Benchmarked a range of SQL Server configurations on a variety of hardware platforms (RAID, and SQL system file disc locations). Also responsible hot backup, tape backup, monitoring, alerts, performance tuning, and SLA development.

Created a SQL Server environment supporting Compaq’s Client support operations in Dublin (1500 seat call center). Involved in overall system design, implementation, and administration. Used a variety of system diagnostic tools including BMC Patrol, Legato and ArcServer tape backup, Compaq Inside Manager, Seagate Ashwin scheduler, and Vantive Helpdesk software. Day to day duties included problem management and resolution, from WAN connectivity to security, performance tuning, and database corruption. Designed a hot backup solution for a 24 x 7 helpdesk (Dublin) operation.

Primarily responsible for the support of 75 SQL servers supporting Microsoft’s European operations. Complete mixture of SQL servers, SQL Server 4.21a, SQL Server 6.0, and SQL Server 6.5 on WinNT 3.51 and 4.0. Acquired exposure to SQL Server internals through access to MS internal Knowledge Base. Worked closely with developers debugging SQL code, locking , performance, and reporting problems. My team responsible for IIS and intranet development. Developed a number of internal tools to facilitate the administration of a large complex SQL Server environment, database driven intranet solutions, and report management. Usual fault management duties including, SQL Mail, Alerts, Replication, SNMP, Connectivity, Database Corruption, Database Design, ODBC, Software bugs, Developers, Change Management, and day to day administration on a regular basis. Delivered a design for overnight housekeeping routines for a large number of servers, and automated reporting of results.
