Supervising 8 senior nursing students in their clinical rotations at Beverly Hospital (CCU), Melrose-Wakefield Hospital (ICU) and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital (Med/Surg), I provide intensive instruction while providing generous support and encouragement. I instill confidence in my students by trusting them in new situations and by demonstrating calm under pressure or while in unusual circumstances. And I adjust their experiences according to individual learning style and need. I stay involved a little bit longer with my students, getting more in-depth with them on care plans and reflections. I want them to know they have an advocate in the profession after our time is done. This position has really highlighted my talent for adult learning and my passion for education, and I will continue my work here in the Fall 2015 semester.

Emergency Room

Once again, my role involves the care of emergency room patents, including triage and critical care. I work three 11a-11p shifts per week, and enjoy exposure to pediatrics, which certainly benefits from my prior school nursing. There is significant liaising here with case managers and shortages require tending more closely to continuity of care issues, to include patient and family education on treatment options, ongoing care requirements and available resources. As a team, we all watch out to be sure policies and procedures are being followed, even as we are all working very hard. I am proud to have received numerous commendations by patients and families. It really helps to make being new and being out right now easier to digest. If there is one distinction to be gleaned from my time here by those reviewing my profile, it is that I can thrive through challenges and serve a phenomenal diversity of patients, economically and culturally, in a bustling community hospital, even in consideration of shortages. I bring a positive attitude to my job, and this helps me navigate the waters, while always maintaining my signature cool and calm under pressure.

While I wore a lot of hats, care of emergency patients, including triage and critical care continued to be my specialization in this role. Along with that, I boasted a 99% pass rate as an ACLS instructor across 5 hospitals in a consortium, served on the PT Flow Committee and trained as a Nurse Supervisor. My shift on ED was 7a-7p, and I served as Charge Nurse three times per week on average. After training, I earned the great distinction to cover 3p-7p as Hospital Supervisor over all nursing for 107 beds, reporting direct to the CEO and CNO. I also taught CPR out in the community. I loved the teams I worked with in every role at Merrimack, and only left due to the potential opportunities for learning that would exist in a larger hospital network.

Hard work and long hours continued to characterize my career while part time at Exeter! I was in the ED from 7a-7p every other weekend, while also working as a school nurse. This position kept me fresh and in the game as a caregiver, and like most others, required triage and charge duties, too. This was a great community hospital environment with team cohesion and high standards of care.

Starting as a School Nurse here, I came to lead 25 RNs over 23 schools serving 8,800 students three years into my tenure. I oversaw care plans; adherence to policies, procedures and protocols; and managed personnel functions from recruiting and hiring to training. I was responsible for organizing in-services for all sites, too. Continuity of care was a huge concern here, and I tried my best to educate and encourage parents to keep with established care plans and guided them to resources like Mass Health when finances were an issue. I sat on the district-wide crisis team, Wellness Board and covered for the Public Health Nurse, while reporting to a physician mentor, liaising with the Superintendent of Schools and bridging the divide between the Health and Education departments, which required educating the latter side on handling communicable disease occurrences. One of my favorite accomplishments here was managing the implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR), and one of my most rewarding contributions was running a Dental Van program for underprivileged kids. I really put a lot into that, making sure we had healthy snacks and even movies onsite. I made dental care fun, and took the time to courageously encourage students to communicate with their parents about oral hygiene, while also educating guardians directly about individual care needs, continuity of care and general daily dental requirements for the child patient. Our success with the Dental Van led to a formal collaboration with Northern Essex Community College as part of their student education program.

Serving in the infirmary with basic first aid, emergency, triage and continuity-of-care services, I worked overnights Saturday and Sunday every other weekend, while maintaining a full-time day schedule. This was a prestigious private boarding school setting with some foreign national students, requiring keen attention to parent-school relations, record keeping and international parental informing and consent requirements. Confidentiality was a major concern here, based on the close quarters, and never once did we experience a breach associated with my name. I really enjoyed coaching students one-to-one on health issues, and felt a great sense of fulfillment by being a caregiver to those away from home.

As school nurse to 1,700 students from K-8, I liaised frequently with staff and parents and managed care plans in a more involved way than typical school nurses. It was here that my attentiveness to continuity of care really showed itself in my passionate and compassionate care. In Methuen, I had the great chance to train staff on emergency medicine and procedures, which found me commended for my instructor capabilities and complimented for my teaching style.

Working four nights until 11p, I rotated on charge twice per week, caring for 70 patients on average at any time in a walk-in center, with most triaged in from the ER.

I started as an ER nurse at MGH, coming to be trusted for intense SICU nursing just two years into tenure, where I swiftly was permitted to take on charge duties. There were 12 cardiac surgical beds that were sometimes used as transplant beds. This was an early introduction to intensive care at its deepest levels. I got very involved in my role and performed beyond even my own expectations, coming to take a seat on the Primary Nursing Committee while excelling in general and intensive care, primary assessment, care planning and patient education, all of which earned me numerous commendations. It was at MGH where I was first told that I could excel in leadership, case management and education. Perhaps this is why my roles have almost always involved all three! Last but not least, with very involved charge duties in such an environment, I learned from MGH that I was a natural hands-on leader, and watched how this benefitted team dynamics, patient care and workflow. My MGH years are ones I have always carried with me, for of course they laid the foundation for exceptional nursing that has come to define my career path.
