Investigated and developed advanced algorithms for underwater acoustic communications and provided software to integrate real world hardware with Simulink test environments.

Investigated modern communication systems for uncoordinated multiple user satellite communications. Based on this research a receiver structure was developed utilizing iterative estimation techniques to increase the potential throughput of these systems. This receiver was developed mathematically using a sound theoretical basis before being implemented and tested in a MATLAB Simulation environment. Elements of this work have been published and presented at international conferences.

Worked with a small team to develop a flexible Magneto Inductive communications platform for the purpose of rapid testing and product development. My role in the project was developing embedded Linux drivers to provide support for the custom hardware platform. I was also responsible for designing and debugging circuit boards for testing and de-risking activities. Additionally I was responsible for fully evaluating a digital filtering chip for suitability in the next revision of an existing project. I was also responsible for optimizing embedded software using a combination of compiler optimization techniques and inline assembly coding.

Worked with a small research team to develop a magneto inductive communications system for a robotic platform capable of transmitting video through the earth. My main role involved design of the physical transmitter, antenna design, and embedded Linux development.The project was taken from conception to completion in a four month period making use of off the shelf components and rapid prototyping techniques. To ensure a demonstrable prototype was ready on time we conducted extensive bench top and real world testing in an abandoned mine.

Developed energy use models for water heating and milk cooling on dairy farms based on a combination of theoretical modelling and a series of onsite energy auditsPrepared case studies investigated energy and cost saving potential for pre-cooling, refrigeration heat recovery, variable frequency drive systems, and energy efficient lighting.Set-up and installed a web energy logger to provide real-time monitoring of a geothermal heating system at a poultry facility.

Determined and outlined the criteria and developed software for measuring anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-glucoside)in blueberry products using a computer vision system. The system was calibrated and verified using external measurements. Installed and developed monitoring and control system for sub-irrigation in cattle pastures as part of a water usage study. The work included installation of sensors and development of relevant control and automation software in the NI LabVIEW environment.
