About Elizabeth Emig
I am a web designer turned front-end developer with a passion for building and creating with code. During my first position as a graphic designer I was charged with updating the company website. Since I am a designer at heart, I started learning HTML and CSS so I could better control how the content appeared on the site. I quickly realized that I had a knack for coding and over the last decade I made the transition from designer to a designer / developer hybrid to front-end developer. The transition was very natural and I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey so far. My goals for the future is to complete my Full-Stack certification I'm currently working on and becoming certified in web accessibility. Most of my experience has been with marketing agencies large (r2integrated and 160over90) and small (Unidev). While I was at Unidev I was a designer / developer hybrid which gave me a rare opportunity of being able to take a project through the entire process. I met with clients and discussed their businesses and what their specific needs were for their websites. I worked closely with project managers and maintained contact with clients throughout the wireframing and mockup stages and I worked on building the final product. One such project was for Healthcare+, a company that provided management web application for hospital / hospice workers. The code had become severely outdated and wasn't mobile ready. We were tasked with updating and reskinning the application. It was one of the most intensive project I had ever worked on. I designed the UI which had multiple sections and dynamic menus. There were hundreds of pages that had to be stripped of inline styles and replaced with semantic HTML. There were a lot of moving parts and it was incredibly difficult given the reduced deadline, but we were able to deliver a mobile ready product that provided healthcare workers with an all-in-one application that helped them be able to do their jobs without having to fight the software. I have 11 years of professional experience in front-end development and I enjoy working on teams that promote learning and helping each other. I have worked on a wide variety of websites and web applications, many of which introduced me to something I hadn't encountered before. This has enabled me to be flexible with my code and pick up new concepts/software/languages quickly. I enjoy new challenges and look forward to continuing my career in the field of development.

Web Developer (Drupal)
- Brought on as a subgroup of the Arts and Sciences web team dedicated to building custom Drupal sites for faculty research projects which had not been available before- Designed flagship website that was as custom as the project subject: federal workers from the mid 1700's to the 1800's while still obeying campus branding guidelines. Though I am no longer practicing design, I volunteered in order to keep the project moving and worked with the professor to achieve his vision- I hadn't worked with Drupal since Drupal 7 and the team was transitioning to Drupal 10. When I wasn't designing or helping with existing sites I built out components for practice and was able to begin contributing to the codebase within a couple months- I participated in code reviews and sprint retros to help improve the team's workflow. Our sprints were 2 week intervals and we were working towards establishing guidelines that were previously not in place and tracked progress and communications through JIRA- Due to my previous experience outside of Drupal, I was able to provide insight on component organization and file structure based on atomic design theory
Front End / Ui Developer
- I was brought on to assist the development team with updating their web application, Team Management System (TMS) which was used to track high school and college clay target shooting clubs across the Midwest- My main task was taking existing PHP files and translating them into Twig templates. I went line by line through the files and rewrote PHP calls into semantic HTML with Twig features- While I worked through the pages, I also made style improvements (increased padding and margins, font sizes and added heirarchy) that increased legibility without impacting the user experience- Before my contract ended, the team asked me to explain my coding methodology so they could continue working how I had started. I gave them a presentation explaining Atomic Design and BEM and how I use both to maintain clean, easily editable code
Frontend Developer
- I was part of the experiential web team that built digital aspects of events for brands (including promotional websites, VIP member digital events and other web applications- Developed brand and foundation websites using ModX, WordPress and other content management tools.
