Mentored by: Christopher Price, PhD. My thesis work investigated the lubrication mechanisms underlying healthy and osteoarthritic articular cartilage function. I investigated the role of synovial fluid constituents and lubricant properties, as well as cartilage material properties on the ex vivo tribomechanical behaviors of articular cartilage. I also developed a novel technique for simultaneously investigating the interfacial dynamics of ex vivo articular cartilage during dynamic shear sliding.

I participated in weekly update meetings with a graduate student mentor and weekly joint lab meetings and journal clubs. I developed 5 degree of freedom adaptive clamps for uniaxial load machines and a novel technique to assess morphometry of soft tissues using MRI. I also developed a technique to assess soft tissue orientation changes using a combination of in vitro tissues and imaging.

In this NSF funded REU program, I performed a literature review on the development and current applications of pneumatic actuators. Using this literature search, I developed a not-to-scale functional prototype to use pneumatic actuators to reduce the penetration force required for drilling applications. Pilot experiments saw more than five-fold decreases in necessary force using pneumatic actuators compared to standard drills.
