About Eric Meier
Eric Meier is the Supervisor of Network Model Administration at ERCOT. He works across the grid operations and transmission planning domains with expertise in transmission planning, grid modeling and simulation, software development and integration, and leading engineering teams.Eric leads a team of engineers which builds steady state, short circuit, geomagnetic disturbance, and operational grid models of the Texas Interconnection. The team works to solve complex engineering problems while building the grid models of the future along with new modeling tools.Eric earned a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Texas. Eric also serves on advisory boards for the Texas State Electrical Engineering, and Bismarck State College Electrical Transmission Systems Technology programs advising on the curriculums and workforce needs. He’s held leadership positions in IEEE and is an IEEE senior member.I’m interested in energy systems integration to better plan and optimize the nations energy system while integrating vast amounts of renewable energy, developing integrated national transmission systems, advancing grid simulation tools, plan for high impact low frequency events, and how to build high performing teams. If you want to chat, send me a LinkedIn message.

Network Model Engineer Senior - Model Administration
Network Modeling Engineer 3 - Model Administration
In 2021 I led the System Protection Working Group future year case build where we built five ASPEN Oneliner cases to represent the planned system from 2022 to 2026 that can be used for protection studies.I worked with another engineer to get a Jenkins system running on our servers and built jobs to automate daily tasks across our servers in our model building environment. I also set up our BitBucket Git repository to store the code for our modeling tools and worked to convert VBA based apps to C# to standardize our code base.I spend time working with the new engineers in the engineer development program (EDP) as I teach them SQL and querying basics. I also assign them projects, and daily work in our team, serve as a EDP mentor, and train them. I guide them through the projects I assign them from beginning to end including projects such as the development of new modeling software tools, refactoring existing tools, and model data cleanup.
Network Modeling Engineer 2 - Model Administration
I built ERCOT's second ever set of GIC models in 2019 and reduced the model build time from 1 year to 4 months with the Planning Geomagnetic Disturbance Task Force. This was accomplished by developing an Access database to handle and manage GIC model change submissions from transmission companies. The tool stored the previous GIC model and allowed users to submit changes to build on top of the model using a primitive time based modeling system. I also worked closely with the transmission companies to train them on GIC modeling, coordinate modeling changes, and facilitate the model build. Prior to this I had no knowledge of GIC modeling so I had to teach myself the fundamentals of GIC modeling for power systems and how to do the modeling in PSS/E and PowerWorld. In 2020, I lead the 21SSWG case build for the Steady State Working Group. I facilitated the case build, modeled and dispatched generation (generation dispatching was done with PowerWorld), and worked with transmission companies to help them complete their modeling. During the case build I also dispatched the cases The SSWG cases are PSS/E cases and are built using Siemens MOD. I built detailed models of generation sites in PSS/E and ASPEN for the steady state, short circuit, and geomagnetic disturbance planning models. One of our challenges was the data quality of resource information so I built a tool using VB/WinForms help folks easily validate Excel based RARFs and provide a color coded assessment of data quality to ease RARF reviews and ensure consistency.During this time I also built operations model using the CIM based Network Model Management System (NMMS) and wrote write PL/SQL procedures to perform data validation on user submitted data.I also provided input on the ERCOT RIOO project with respect to data validation and provided guidance on what data should be collected.I revamped engineer development program (EDP) SQL and querying competency to help train our new engineers.
Engineer 1 - Edp
As a member of the Engineering Development Program (EDP) at ERCOT, I developed skills in Network Modeling, Transmission Planning, Operations, and Markets. The EDP is focused on building core skills to help you become a competent power systems engineer at ERCOT. My project focused on risk-based or probabilistic transmission planning and implementing methods to create cases for risk-based planning. These cases could then be used to evaluate transmission projects under a variety of scenarios and ranked using probabilistic criteria in addition to normal deterministic transmission planning criteria. My project resulted in a IEEE published paper: An Approach for Probabilistic Composite Power System Transmission Planning - ERCOT.
Electrical Engineering Industry Advisory Board Member
Electrical Transmission Systems Technology Advisory Board Member
Distribution Planning - System Integrity Intern
Conducted a study to determine how revised wire temperature and ampacity ratings would affect the distribution system by applying the new standards to each circuits limiting factor. Assisted with planning for low voltage substation removal and conversion. Created one-lines using Visio for various projects and conducted various feedloads.
Asset Information - Intern
Worked with geographical information systems to maintain electronic mapping records, used AutoCad to migrate and standardize engineering designs into an engineering document manager.
Janitor
In my work for the WPI Facilities Department, I worked in a team to clean dorm rooms and academic buildings to help prepare the buildings for when students arrive in the fall. We cleaned all dorm rooms and worked around any students staying for the summer.
