As the Associate Vice President for Information Security, I provide the dynamic leadership requiredto support the UW System’s mission through an effective information security program. Providing anational perspective on information security planning, risk management and effective leadership in anevolving higher education and information technology environment.I lead the development and updating of the UW System information security program. This willguide the work of the UW System Administration and its institutions with respect to information security.This includes presenting information security plans and reports to the UW System President and Board ofRegents as necessary.I oversee the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to information security. The AVP manages policy activities, including working with the Associate Vice President for Information Technology, the Council of Chief Information Officers, system wide governance groups, and external organizations to inform policy and program. I work effectively across the UW System and its institutions in protecting the systems and the data contained in those systems, maintaining the information security infrastructure, and acquiring information security systems and coordinating with vendors.Using federal National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards as a guide, the UW System information security program encompasses a comprehensive set of information security policies and procedures as necessary to guide UW institutions.

As CISO, I serve a key role in University of Wisconsin System leadership, working closely with senior administration, academic leaders, and the larger UW System community. I am an advocate for the UW System’s information security requirements and am responsible for the development and delivery of a comprehensive information security program to optimize the security posture of the UW System.

As the Director of Information Security, I led the development and implementation of a security program that leverages collaborations and campus resources, facilitates information security governance, advises senior leadership on security direction and resource investments, and designs appropriate policies to manage information security risk.

I managed and lead all staff within Central IT and for promoted relationships throughout UW Colleges and UW-Extension. I was responsible for all aspects of the daily operations of the entire department. I was also responsible for information security and the financial management of the department, ensuring accurate financial reporting, payment of invoices, invoicing for services rendered, budgeting, and using sound financial management practices. I worked closely with the CIO to establish IT strategy for the institution.

I established the strategic direction for application development, web development, project management, support service portfolio and related service level agreements in a complex, consensus driven, centralized/decentralized IT environment. Accomplishments in this role include creating a Project Management Office (PMO) within CITS to deliver large, multi-million dollar, high quality, projects to partners throughout the organization, establishing the first institution-wide business intelligence (BI) environment and being the project leader on benchmarking report for UW-System wide ERP systems (HR/Payroll and Financials).As an application development leader I improved the application development processes to increase security, stability and quality of delivered software. Also, I increased the efficiency of the Oracle PeopleSoft Support Team by utilizing lean process improvement methodology.As the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) I set the strategic direction of the institution's information security program. I lead the development and implementation of effective, and reasonable, policies to secure sensitive data and ensure compliance with relevant legislation.Additionally, I am responsible for all aspects of supervision for 4 direct reports, including 1 manager with 9 direct reports.

Led the UITS Enterprise Instructional Support (EIS) technical team. This team was responsible for all technical operations of the UA's primary Learning Management System (LMS), Desire2Learn (D2L) and iTunes U.Also led the UITS Web Services and UITS Utilities Teams. Established a vision and strategic direction for a fee-based UITS service to build Drupal based web sites for the UA campus community. Advanced security initiatives by implementing a process to ensure all websites built by the UITS Web Services Team meet OWASP Top 10 standards for web application security. Completed year long effort, in partnership with UA External Relations, to replace the main campus website with a modern Drupal based website.For 9 months I led the Mosaic Project's Environment Team. During this timeframe the new HR and Student Administration systems had successful go-lives. The Environment Team is responsible for all systems, application and database support needed by the new enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications. The ERP applications are PeopleSoft Human Capital Management, PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, Oracle Business Intelligence, Kuali Financials and Kuali Coeus.Managed a staff of 25 full-time employees, 3 consultants and 3-5 student employees.Foster and participate in cross-divisional functional teams to improve the UITS customer experience.

Lead team of 2 staff and 3 student web developers in support of student computing. Accomplishments include implementing change control and software development lifecycle best practices which greatly improved quality of delivered software. Participated in strategic departmental restructuring process.

Develop custom software solutions to support faculty use of learning technologies in "state of the art" classroom building, Manuel Pacheco Integrated Learning Center (ILC) including, laptop carts, advanced teaching stations and student responder system.

Lead developer and system administrator for corporate CRM and Financial systems.

Lead team of in-house, and contract, application developers through hundreds of Laboratory Information System to Hospital Information System upgrades as part of overall corporate Y2K strategy.
