I worked at CIS Wake as a part-time accounting and operations assistant while pursuing my second degree in civil engineering at NC State. My duties at CIS Wake included monthly bookkeeping in QuickBooks, which involved generating AP, AR, Income vs. Expenses and other reports; payroll processing; addition of new employees to company healthcare and other benefits; donor management and development; and many other wide-ranging administrative tasks. I worked in the traffic engineering department at the NC Dept. of Transportation as a summer intern. I focused on traffic network analysis with an eye on determining how much additional traffic would be generated on the state road network as a result of new construction. I became familiar with the NC DOT Highway Manual, became proficient in use of the SimTraffic software package, and assisted with permit application reviews. I also accompanied senior engineers to meet with members of the public and industry stakeholders in order to foster mutual project understanding and generate buy-in from partners.

GPI US is a small educational services company based in Seattle that arranges study abroad programs between the US and East Asia. I was responsible for all aspects of creating and running our study abroad programs in Seattle, which includes program proposals, budgeting, itinerary creation; recruiting host families, teachers & staff; issuing payroll; and on-the-ground program support while students are in town. During the busiest seasons I managed & supported as many as 10 study abroad programs (250+ students & staff) at one time.

Dorsey & Whitney is an international law firm based in Seattle. I worked on a national-scale Japanese document review project as part of a 15-person team, where I received 50 to 100 Japanese-language documents each day, and was responsible for reviewing and summarizing their content in English for use by attorneys across the country with a database tool called Ringtail. The documents concerned the automotive industry and were complex, extremely technical, and demanded a thorough knowledge of legal & engineering terminology in both English and Japanese.

I worked as teacher and translator in Yahaba, Japan where I taught English at two local Junior High schools, and did translation and live interpretation for Yahaba’s sister-city and exchange programs. Every day I taught 3 to 5 English classes, and I was also responsible for grading, test administration, lesson planning, and assisting with school events. I returned to the US in late 2011 after the Fukushima earthquake & tsunami disasters in northern Japan.

I was hired at Philips to assist with the localization of their portable defibrillators (AEDs) and documentation into a set of 20 world languages. I worked with the localization PM, and together we collaborated with multiple departments including marketing, engineering, the factory floor, and overseas translators. Day to day I proofread materials before and after translation to check for technical and formatting errors, and had changes made through Philips’ document control system. I also initiated and tracked translation requests with outside contractors using SDL TMS, a system I helped implement. I also did Japanese translations myself when called for. Occasionally I was called on to do product testing to assess ease of use and accuracy of translations.

I was hired at Nintendo on a 12-person contract team to translate and localize a Nintendo DS game, Style Savvy, from Japanese to English. I translated game dialogue from Japanese to English using a purpose-built MS Access database. I also translated developer manuals, Excel documents, other technical records, and e-mail, averaging 4,000 words a day. After completing translations I tested and debugged weekly software updates from the Japanese developer, Syn Sophia. Our team worked extremely well together and we finished the project well ahead of schedule.

As an intern I took calls, managed constituent correspondence through the US Senate’s Intranet Quorum database, greeted visitors, distributed mail, and performed office maintenance. I also conducted casework on State Department, IRS, and Social Security Administration matters under the supervision of the staff, and assisted in reviewing applicants for the 2008 Federal Appropriations Bill. The position required strong customer service skills and professional conduct due to the high level of contact with constituents and government officials.

For 3 years, groups of 50 Japanese junior high school students came to the University of Washington as part of the Kawasaki Summer Program. As an Activity Leader I helped the students speak English and lead them in various activities around Washington such as field trips, Mariners games, hiking on Mt. Rainier, and shopping at the Supermall. During the outings I was a combination tour guide, camp counselor and translator. Responsibility under pressure and endurance were essential for this job, and I was invited back each year until the program ended in 2001.
