• Changing how people think about aging with a new book, Enlightened Aging, Building Resilience for a Long, Active Life, released in summer 2017. • Finding practical ways to promote high functioning in seniors through the Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) study. Since 1986, ACT has been studying how to delay or prevent dementia. Groundbreaking results include linking exercise to later dementia onset. • Researching chronic illness management, health services and economics, and patient-provider relationships, among other areas. Clinical work includes a small but long-standing general practice.• Helping Kaiser Permanente Washington be a learning health system, in which research influences practice and practice influences research to promote better health and well-being. Work includes connecting scientists, health system executives, and clinicians to ensure that Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI) studies are relevant to patients and providers. • Collaborating with partners at the University of Washington, the Health Care Systems Research Network, the Health Care Systems Collaboratory of the National Institutes of Health, and others.
