Mr. Backlund is an engineer who focusses on electric transmission lines, substations, and trenchless technology. He also has experience with compressor stations, solar farms, and wind farms. His roles include serving as a client account manager, project manager, and a senior/principal engineer. Mr. Backlund has worked on projects in 21 states and Ontario. His experience with HDDs include conceptual designs, constructability site visits, scoping geotechnical programs (for both design purposes and for contractor’s to bid projects appropriately), final HDD construction drawings, performing pipe stress and inadvertent return calculations, and construction oversight. He also has experience reviewing as-built construction data and approving as-drilled paths. The projects he has worked on have ranged from crossing a highway with relatively flat open land on both sides, to steep topographic changes, to navigating city streets and parks. His experience in each facet of the design and construction of HDDs allows him to take a big picture approach to the problems at hand.His experience involving high-voltage overhead transmission lines includes several new 100+ mile transmission lines as well as working on smaller, less than 20 mile re-build projects. He has experience performing desktop studies, developing subsurface exploration programs, providing geotechnical recommendations to the structural engineer, performing foundation design and preparing construction drawings, and overseeing foundation installation. He has utilized several innovative foundation options including a nomograph based design for drilled piers through variable subsurface conditions, micropiles to support the foundations, a contractor option to install drilled piers or rock anchors with a pile cap, and a mat foundation overlying 200+ feet of mine spoils. Mr. Backlund is also skilled in the evaluation of slope stability issues. He has performed several designs to remediate slope stability issues near pipelines, electric transmission lines, and substations.
