Eric L. Barker is a noted neuropharmacologist, award-winning teacher, skilled academic leader, and pharmacist. He currently serves as Dean and Professor in the Purdue College of Pharmacy. He received his B.S. in Pharmacy from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1988. He then received a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Vanderbilt University and completed post-doctoral research at Vanderbilt and Emory University before joining the faculty of Purdue University in 1998. He is a member of several professional associations that include the American Pharmacists Association, Society for Neuroscience, and American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics where he has served in leadership positions for the Neuropharmacology Division and as of January 2016 became Editor-In-Chief for Pharmacological Reviews. Dr. Barker’s research interests are in the area of molecular actions of drugs of abuse and other drugs that affect the brain. He has received grant support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Mental Health, National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, Lilly Research Laboratories, and DARPA. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Dr. Barker has been recognized for his efforts in teaching medicinal chemistry and pharmacology having been awarded the College of Pharmacy Dr. Aziz Outstanding Teaching Award as well as the Purdue Book of Great Teachers, the Teaching Academy, and the Purdue University Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award. Other recognitions that Dr. Barker has received include being named a University Faculty Scholar and a 2011-2012 CIC-Academic Leadership Program Fellow. Dr. Barker’s wife Loretta (StLCOP ’90) is also a pharmacist practicing with Franciscan Health.
