After 50 years, Mr. Bartczak still loves practicing architecture. His early emphasis on project management provided him with experience on an extraordinarily wide range of projects - schools, industrial plants, testing laboratories, and performing arts projects. Much of his work has been in the public sector, with projects of varying size and complexity for the City & County of Denver, Colorado Historical Society, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, NIST, and the National Park Service. He has been responsible for the programming, design, and construction oversight on numerous educational projects for nearly all Metro Denver area school districts. He completed a series of projects on the Arts Building at the Auraria Higher Education Center (a ceramics studio and new arts foundry). His extensive experience in the renovation of existing buildings led to a long-standing relationship with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, culminating in an $8 million remodeling/addition of the historic Tramway Building, in downtown Denver. The project included new teaching/rehearsal/performance facilities for the National Theatre Conservatory (14 individual studios and a fully renovated 185 seat theatre), and a 16,000 square-foot fourth floor addition for an in-house speech lab. Recent projects include life safety upgrades for UCAR, an intimate, elegantly-detailed sound recording studio for MakeMusic (both in Boulder), high-tech remodeling for TTM Technologies, a historic loft conversion, and miscellaneous residential projects. With few exceptions, Mr. Bartczak’s involvement in projects covers all activities from initial scope definition, programming, and facility assessment through concept & detailed design, and construction. His orientation as a “working” versus “managing” project architect and his strong desire to maintain a direct relationship with each client have always enabled him to deliver projects that are responsive to client needs, technically sound, and well organized.The bellcurve of private practice has led from small residential projects to complicated educational and industrial projects to major performing arts projects, and back to small residential work. Every project, regardless of size, cost, or complexity, remains gratifying, as does building trusting relationships with clients-turned-friends and friends-turned-clients alike.
