Supplier Engagement Program ManagerL-3 Communication Systems - West Jul 2012 - Apr 2014Supplier Engagement was created to work with the supply chain taking a three fold approach:1. Rehabilitated critical but poorly performing suppliers2. Engage new suppliers so that they perform well from the start3. Transition poorly performing suppliers that won't or can't change to higher performing partners.I work with 8-12 critical suppliers to improve their delivery performance and reduce their quality defects. I use various tools to accomplish this task, a weekly open order report and meeting, weekly reporting on quality defects, a yearly risk assessment based off of AS9100 to assess risk of systems and processes, Kaizen events as necessary to improve 6S, WIP, Process flows, root cause and corrective action, and auditing incoming and final inspection.I have seen a 10-12 (out of 100) point increase to delivery and quality scores with my suppliers since implenting the Supplier Engagement approach with the supply chain. This translates to reducing risk and improving the probablity of on time deliveries which allows us to make our deliveries to our customers. The best part of the process is that 9 out of 10 suppliers continue to improve after engagement as we are driving long term, systemic improvements, as opposed to tactical short term fixes.My group uses various models to track suppliers and to pick up on early trends, such as a volume model (when volumes increase 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 2.5, and 3x), upcoming first article spreadsheet, and past delivery performance on first time builds, first articles, and performance on when a supplier volume increases as stated above. We also track by part number, and when a supplier performs poorly on a PN, we look at other suppliers providing the same PN to see if they have better performance.I love the Supplier Engagement group and have definitely greatly enhanced my PMP program management skills by implementing the areas outlined above!
