Senior Manager/Real Estate Transaction Advisory Capital Markets GroupEy Sep 1988 - Aug 2001San Diego & IrvineWhile completing my degree at SDSU, I obtained an internship with Ernst & Whinney in January 1988, then obtained a full-time position for nine months from September 1988 until the announcement of the firm's merger with Arthur Young, creating Ernst & Young ("EY") in June 1989. In September 1989 with the S&L/Real Estate Crisis quickly expanding throughout the country (and needing a job) I began my real estate career at Kenneth Leventhal & Co.-Newport Beach. The "schedule" (e.g., produce ~65 billable hours a week thru 1995 and "we'll teach you real estate"): audit real estate companies from January thru March, then real estate workouts, restructurings, bankruptcies, liquidations, S&L closures, REIT IPOs, high-yield private debt placements, homebuilder M&A, opportunity fund formations, strategic/business planning, and litigation support for the remainder of each calendar year.In April 1995 EY announced the acquisition of Kenneth Leventhal & Co creating EY Kenneth Leventhal & Co. ("EYKL"). The objective: continue dominating real estate accounting, tax, and consulting services nationally and expand KL's real estate expertise globally. Importantly, the S&L/Real Estate Crisis had ended, and for the first time in history the SEC allowed the international accounting firms to begin providing investment banking services. As such, at 29 years old and with the capital markets recovering, I presented my business plan to launch a real estate capital markets group for the Western U.S. to the managing partner of the Newport Beach office, and received his and the partners' approval.In 2001, despite six consecutive years of rapidly increasing profitability, the SEC's adverse position on the Enron/Arthur Andersen litigation forced the partners of EYKL to exit real estate investment banking services. As a result, I formed Bergstrom Capital Advisors, Inc. in August 2001 to continue providing real estate investment banking services for clients of EYKL and others.
