The first semester of my senior year, I was selected to be a part of an undergraduate research team at the University of New Mexico Hospital. In addition to school credit, this course has given me extensive research training, patient interaction, and the opportunity to work with emergency department physicians in a high risk setting. During my time in the emergency department I have seen a wide variety of patients and the tests that physicians must quickly utilize to provide the best treatment options. The fast pace of New Mexico's only level 1 trauma center has provided me an unparalleled experience to witness a multitude of medical interventions with some of New Mexico's finest physicians.

The Biomedical Research Education Programs (BREP) provided me with professional student employment position in a graduate-level setting. My work with the BREP has included working with a multitude of programs, faculty, graduate students, the Office of Research, and the Office of Human Research Protection. Through my assistance with each of these entities I have observed the lives, work, and demands required of graduate students, post-docs, and junior faculty. Working in an environment surrounded by the intelligent scholars and faculty has only further compelled me to pursue a life of learning and professionalism.

At the Roswell Medical Clinic I worked with several family practice health care providers including a medical doctor, physician's assistant, and nurse practitioner to provide treatment for a diverse population of patients. I triaged patients and collected general patient concerns for timely visits with their physician. I acted as a floater in the clinic to readily assist all 3 physicians and keep the clinic running smoothly. I handled patient charts, prepped patients for procedures, and handled patient paperwork including but not limited to: prior authorizations for pharmacies with nurse's assistance, Medicare paperwork, and medication scripts.

Working at the registrars office I familiarized myself with the University of New Mexico protocols and trained to use the Starrs and Banner registration systems. I provided direct assistance to the requests and demands of UNM students, gained a vast knowledge of the registration process, and offered general help to the many professional personnel who shared the same student oriented goal. During this experience, I worked on many collaborative projects including the switch to electronic processing. As a Freshman, working for the registrar's office provided me a rewarding experience in my college education and served to teach many lessons regarding student services.
