About Eric Capps

Since 2003 I have been primarily responsible for the software running on all telematics devices in inthinc's product suite. Over the years this has evolved from C on embedded Linux to Java on Android. With a love for problem solving, my career started out as a software developer and slowly migrated to manager once our team grew. I now manage a team of software engineers in the U.S., Russia and India.I received my Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science from University of Utah.

  • Avaltus
    Senior Software Engineer/Architect

    * Designed and implemented a new version of the authoring application so it was a true client/server application. Also, switched the data store from an object oriented database to a more standard back end (Oracle or SQL Server). Deloitte and Touche estimated this project would cost $850,000 and take over 8 months to complete with a full team of developers. Designed a more elegant solution and converted the application with one other developer in less than four months. This allowed the authoring tool to run over a dial-up connection, where a 100-Mbps network connection was required previously. Both the client and the server were written in Java and supported on Windows, Solaris and Linux.* Won the Creativity & Innovation in Product Quality award in 2000 from votes submitted by my peers. This award is given to the individual whose visionary innovation and creative ideas succeeded in dramatically improving the quality of Avaltus’ interactive learning solutions.* Engineered an XML solution to remove the reliance on a proprietary object oriented database to avoid a 4-percent royalty payment on each courseware sale. Implemented this solution in less than a week. * Managed a talented team of developers who are responsible for implementing new features and maintaining the Jupiter Learning Server (J2EE web application) and all learning objects (Java Applets, HTML and Javascript) for both web and CD delivery.* Optimized the Jupiter Learning Server to handle over 750 concurrent users per mid range CPU and reduced memory usage from 5 MB per concurrent user to 250 KB per concurrent user. These optimizations significantly reduced the complexity in creating a server farm that can handle thousands of concurrent users.

    * Created Designer’s Edge (C++/MFC), which sold twice the initial projections – four million in sales the first year with only four software developers. This product won the Software Product of the Year Award from Multimedia Training, the Stellar Award from Windows Sources and received the first five star rating ever given from Interactivity. Our team also won the Times Mirror Innovation Award for our work on this product.* Created many base classes, which were adopted as standards across all applications. * Developed Quest 6.0, a multimedia authoring system, which utilized COM/ActiveX technology to make it completely extensible.
