Neuroscientist studying interactions between the nervous system and immune system. My research focuses on the neural signals that enable communication between the brain and body, and how these signals can be modulated to alter the course of disease.More info at sites below: Faculty page >> https://feinstein.northwell.edu/institutes-researchers/our-researchers/eric-h-chang-phdBluesky >> changsbrain.bsky.socialtwitter (X) >> https://x.com/changsbrainFrontiers >> https://loop.frontiersin.org/people/50892

Assistant Professor, Center For Bioelectronic Medicine And Biomedical ScienceNorthwell Health Feb 2018 - Apr 2023Lake Success, Ny, UsResearch focused on neural signaling between the brain and body, specifically on how neurons represent information about immune responses. -
Assistant Professor, Lab Of Translational NeuroscienceNorthwell Health Jul 2013 - Dec 2017Lake Success, Ny, UsLed and directed the Lab of Translational Neuroscience at the Feinstein Institute and the Zucker Hillside Hospital. We were part of a research group investigating the biological basis of schizophrenia and other psychiatric illnesses. Our lab used a range of tools in neuroscience, molecular biology, and imaging (fluorescence microscopy and noninvasive modalities) to examine the structural and molecular changes associated with psychiatric brain disorders. -
Assistant InvestigatorNorthwell Health Jan 2011 - Jun 2013Lake Success, Ny, UsLed multiple collaborative projects examining the role of anti-NMDAR autoantibodies in neuropsychiatric lupus (NP-SLE). This included in vivo brain recordings, cognitive testing of mice immunized with a lupus-related peptide, microscopic analysis of autoantibody-associated brain changes, and developing a novel visuospatial assay for NP-SLE patients in the clinic. Also collaborated with the Marambaud lab to examine the role of the CALHM1 ion channel (relevance to Alzheimer's disease) in synaptic plasticity and cognition. -
Postdoctoral FellowWeill Cornell Medical College Sep 2006 - Dec 2010New York, Ny, UsWorked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Burke Medical Research Institute, a campus of Weill Cornell Medical College. Performed in vivo neurophysiological recordings in order to understand how brain structures, such as the dorsal subiculum, encode recognition information. We showed that novelty information could be represented by local field potential oscillations and neural firing patterns within hippocampal and subicular neuronal populations. -
Doctoral CandidateNew York University Sep 2000 - May 2005New York, Ny, UsGraduate student in NYU's Center for Neural Science where I performed research and served as a Teaching Assistant for a number of undergraduate courses. Performed a lab rotation for one-year in the lab of Dr. Dan Sanes investigating long-term synaptic depression in the developing auditory brainstem.Doctoral dissertation work was performed in the lab of Dr. Patricio Huerta examining mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. This doctoral work involved ex vivo field and whole-cell recordings of neurons from genetically manipulated (knock-in and knock-out) mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. We also worked in collaboration with Drs. Chiye Aoki and Robert Levy to perform electron microscopy quantification of AMPA receptors in the mouse hippocampus. -
Front Desk Clerk At Ucla Guest HouseUcla 1998 - 2000Los Angeles, Ca, UsHandled reservations, front desk duties, and guest relations at the premier hotel on the UCLA campus. -
Research Assistant, Psychology DepartmentUcla 1997 - 2000Los Angeles, Ca, UsPerformed research in the lab of Dr. Charles Randy Gallistel studying the scalar nature of distance memory in mice. Along with two other undergraduates in the lab, we designed and constructed an infrared-based system for tracking mice in a large 4-arm maze in which the location of food reward was varied on a daily basis.I also worked in the lab of Dr. Michael Fanselow, studying the neural basis of fear conditioning in rats. Primarily working with postdoc Dr. Gregory Gale, I performed a lesion study to show that cued fear conditioning was lateralized in the basolateral amygdala of rats. -
