Solving environmental problems is about understanding the complex relationships in chemistry, biology, geology and multiple changing conditions in the environment. Solutions for these complex problems are not found in look-up tables, but rather through identifying the most critical environmental factors, determining the most plausible relationships, evaluating relevant risks and finding ways to modify the conditions to minimize or eliminate the risk to people and the environment.Environmental forensics and exploratory data analysis are tools for unraveling these relationships. Forensics is not about litigation, it is all about discovering the right information to solve the problem. Furthermore, statistics is much more than evaluating distributions and hypothesis testing. It is a set of tools for identifying the multiple relationships between various elements (chemical, physical, temporal, spatial, etc.) in the environment. The goal of environmental forensics is just to translate these complex relationships into story that can be understood by a wide range of stakeholders.For more than 28 years, I have been exploring relationships in geology, chemistry, risk and public health. As an Environmental Forensics practitioner, I help to unravel problems for clients through the application of environmental science within the context of protecting public health. From time to time, I also lecture, work in policy development, and serve as mentor to the next generation of environmental professionals. What better way is there to spend one's career.
