At Orbital ATK, my duties include designing, modeling, drafting, and analyzing tools used to build solid rocket motors. I am proficient in Siemens NX modeling and drafting packages, as well as configuration and revision control through Teamcenter. I am proficient in GD&T and use it on a day to day basis. I perform tolerance stack analysis to determine the proper form, fit, and function of tooling and product interfaces. For each new tool, I am responsible for everything from cradle to grave, including selecting proper materials to be used for the tool, generating cut-sheets specifying vendor components, and calculating the stresses and safety factors during tool usage.At Orbital ATK, I have the opportunity to design several tools for several different rocket programs. Each designs is unique to each tool and each tool has a specific function in its particular application and usage. This position has provided me first hand experience watching the life cycle of the products that Orbital ATK creates, as well as the tools I designed.
The duties for this position are:─ To oversee the use of the machines and equipment by students and ensure that they are being used properly─ Check and maintain equipment to keep them working properly─ Assist students in the preparation and setup of their projects when needed─ Maintain a clean work space in order to minimize safety concerns─ Maintain a safe work environment─ Assist the shop managerThe machine shop has increased my experience in machining and welding. While working in this position, I set out to learn how to use the CNC Haas Mini Mill. I have become proficient with the mill and the lathe, as well as other common shop tools. I have also become very familiar with the 3D printers and other rapid prototyping options that are available in the machine shop.
At AXPRO, my responsibilities included executing experiments, recording and processing data, and writing reports. The experiments involved the detonation of explosives and performing analysis on detonation patterns, pressure waves, velocity of detonation, and blasting procedures. I was in charge of setting up the blasting apparatus, cameras, lights, shields, sensors, and other necessary equipment. I was also the lead for building all test stands, lighting stands, and barriers required for the test. The use of the campus machine shop was required for manufacturing testing equipment. I was also in charge of making necessary modifications to the on and off campus testing facilities.AXPRO allowed for a heightened awareness of safety and proper safety procedures. I worked closely with explosives and professional conduct was required at all times. The position increased my capabilities at setting up testing areas, testing plans, and data collection.
Although this position was several years of summer positions, it was beneficial in many ways.The first several summers I worked as a maintenance worker by servicing and cleaning at-home swimming pools and equipment. I ensured that the equipment functioned properly and that the pool chemicals were properly balanced and maintained. I was also responsible for repairing any plumbing or equipment that had cracked, leaked, or aged and became a safety concern. I was also responsible for winterizing pools for the winter periods of Colorado. I was extremely important to maintain a good relationship with the customer such that they continued to use the service the company provided.In the later summers of working here, I chose to work in the construction department. I was the assistant to the construction manager and complied with all orders, as well as offered suggestions to help the manager in the decision making process. I worked in all aspects of pool construction - from excavation, plumbing and steel, to concrete, tile, plaster, decking and finish work.
