About Eric De Heer, Phd
In my work as a PhD, I focus on chronic pain in psychopathology. As more and more patients report physical symptoms (with pain being the most common) next to psychological problems, more research is needed on the associations and causality of pain and psychopathology. Furthermore, more longitudinal research is needed that examines the role of chronic pain as a risk factor for the development of mental health and related problems, such as suicidal behaviour. My research will encompass all of these topics.In my work as a psychologist I find it important to focus on a thorough diagnostic procedure of mental health problems in putting together a tailored-made advice for treatment. Next to a diagnosis of a mental disorder, information on neuropsychological problems, personality problems and intelligence (to name a few) can contribute to construct such an advice. Furthermore, I find it important to use the strong and healthy traits of persons in the process of recovery. My empathy, optimism, creativity, and inquisitive nature are useful characteristics in patient care as well as in my work as a scientist.
