- Real-Time Performance Analytics- mPulse Product- Streaming Data Platform- Akamai - Data Arch BoardThis is a continuation of the work done at SOASTA after the company was acquired by Akamai, with a greater focus on formal documentation and software architecture reviews. The majority of my time has been utilized as a lead programmer and as a member of the data architecture committee, having time devoted to reviewing both developer code and technical documents.As a programmer, I rewrote the metadata distribution mechanism for the distributed data collection grid. I invented a new stateless way to merge stream data with historic data. And I developed numerous tools and protocol improvements to harden the product in support of the Operations team. I played a key role in a major on-premise infrastructure initiative. In collaboration with several other architects, I authored documents for formal requirements and integration plans.

At SOASTA, a VC funded software startup, the programming mission was for me to build the backend server technology that would power a new adjacency product code-named mPulse - www.akamai.com/mpulse‎. This product later became the worlds leading Real User Measurements (RUM) application and ultimately led Akamai Technologies to purchase the entire company, replacing their in-house RUM offering. Among many notable design and programming accomplishments, I wrote the metadata abstraction layer for the intermediate query language and implemented the real-time query engine as a data warehouse proxy tier. This provided capabilities such as, in-memory time-series deltas, the automatic merging of stream data with historic data, query rewriting for time-series partitioning, and an in-memory column-based lookup service for star schema dimension table key assignment and dimension label insertion - to avoid table joins. I implemented automated sharding with incremental balance, multitenant isolation, a timeline insights engine, the monitoring API, rate limiting and eventually perfect failure detection for high availability, wrote a custom data structure and algorithm extension for Postgres in C, and invented scale-out solutions for Postgres. Leading up to SOASTA being purchased by Akamai, I lead an effort to migrate the existing data store and historic customer data to use Snowflake Computing as the data warehouse.

A member of the Platform Infrastructure team and the single developer responsible for maintaining and upgrading the user-facing image rendering server pool and the image upload server pool. Worked as engineering support for the operations team helping them with capacity planning and large scale data migrations. Wrote the database metadata migration program to transfer all of the user accounts during the acquisition of Kodak and migrated the 60PB physical storage infrastructure from RAID to a hybrid RAID / RAIN model using Cleversafe (later purchased by IBM) as the driver for erasure coding.

Helped Hearst manage a network of web properties that they had purchased from Ziff Davis Media. Assisted the operations team as a Site Reliability Engineer, wrote code to help the system scale-out, and wrote various data feeds and data syncs to other web properties.

Incubator development of a social media chat/messaging application.

Ziff Davis owned a network of social media video game websites that evolved from their video game magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM). My focus was on clustering, performance tuning, and new feature development related to forums and top-k popularity widgets.

I was involved in the design and rewrite of the Clickability content management system and publishing platform.

Lead the coding effort to build a new media website for a major network TV channel launch related to business news.

Product development for the Terracotta Distributed Shared Objects product, now called Big Memory. Contributed to the core infrastructure and tooling. This included writing an Eclipse IDE plugin for the Terracotta software.

Government contract for the San Francisco Department of Human Services. I wrote a scheduling application to help service workers manage their interviews with benefits recipients. The city awarded me "employee of the month".

I wrote a server-side application for the California Department of Health Services to help the state conform to the newly passed HIPPA compliance regulations. This application allowed health care auditors to survey hospitals using a PDA device and allowed them to upload their data sets to a centralized server for aggregation and reporting.

I was a software consultant working for a startup client from Iceland who was building a music sharing / social media website. After the client lost funding, I was moved to a team that was working to build a software requirements modeling tool that would auto-generate pseudo-code and UI mockups.

This was a boutique website development shop. I helped program websites for many clients including Chevron, BEA Software, Montgomery Securities, and Wolters Kluwer.

I was a website developer for brochure sites such as, at the time, local banks, auto dealerships, misc. parts manufacturers, a company that wanted to sign checks on the internet and another company that wanted to sell flowers on the internet.
