Alumnus of the Pannier Lab for Engineering Biomaterials and Gene Delivery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. My research focused on the design, development and optimization of a novel biomaterial-based oral delivery platform for applications in gene therapy and DNA vaccination. By taking advantage of the properties of two natural biomaterials, zein and chitosan, I successfully developed core-shell particulates consisting of DNA loaded chitosan nanoparticles encapsulated in a microparticle matrix of zein, capable of protecting the DNA cargo throughout oral delivery, releasing DNA loaded chitosan nanoparticles in a site-specific manner in the intestine, and mediating successful gene delivery.
