I recently retired from being a cyber-security consultant and I taught data communications and cybersecurity at Central Washington University. I am a systems person who has substantial technical depth. I have worked as both a network architect and as an information assurance (IA; i.e., cybersecurity) architect together with virtually every constituent part of those domains including protocol design and development. I have led groups of hundreds of people. I used to be periodically tasked to rescue “at risk” programs, projects, or high-profile tasks. I often represented my employers to external entities (customers, standards bodies, consortia, governments). I have worked in high assurance computing. My primary area of research is in securing safety systems, network security (e.g., policy-based routing, digital provenance), integrity assurance, and identity and access management. I have 3 patents, 34 publications, 300+ technical papers, and have been a conference speaker at 14+ national or international conferences. I have been a participant in international standards committees (IETF, ISO, others). Senior Cyber Security Consultant
Cyber-security consulting for the MicroSystems Automation Group (MSAG). Working on a contract to create a security risk analysis process for the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that integrates with existing civil aviation safety processes, procedures, and laws. Led the definition of ASF via creating and leading an international consortia involving more than 180 companies and institutions within the context of severe contractual constraints. Secondary responsibilities included representing NetShow’s interests at the IETF and ISO (MPEG-4) and indirectly at the SMPTE and the EBU standards bodies

1) Boeing's chief data communications architect. Migrated 22 different protocol systems to all use TCP/IP protocols, thereby creating the first corporate enterprise network within any Fortune 2000 company. This also introduced the need for Enterprise Security, which I initially began leading. In order to create formal business cases to support network integration, I invented a mechanism to describe computing architectures. I then systematically described the computer architectures of Boeing's strategic line of business (LOB) applications, formally documenting for the first time the deployed computing diversity within Boeing and how it was used. This lengthy study (294 pages) was widely used by Boeing’s application program managers and computing architects to plot the evolution and integration of 2000 of Boeing's most important (line-of-business) applications. It also established a strong business rationale to encourage executives to invest in my network design proposals.2) Boeing’s representative to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) since 1992. Sought to resolve vexatious network problems confronting Boeing (e.g., DNS scalability) as well as to transfer information and Internet technologies into Boeing. Member of the IESG’s IPng Directorate, which led the creation of IPv6.3) Principal in enhancing Boeing’s corporate network security: external security firewalls, internal access management, and internal single sign-on capability. Principal also in Boeing’s corporate Electronic Commerce initiative.4) Boeing’s representative to influence the data communication products of specific computer vendors who were building products which were deemed to be strategic to Boeing, primarily IBM (Token Ring, MPTN) and Sun Microsystems (NFSv3). Also worked major aeronautical network issues within national and international data communications consortia and standards bodies.

Member of a small team which did the product design for the second generation of AT&T Conversant Systems products (PBX and PBX adjunct). Lead engineer for developing a SCSI bus interface which linked PBXs, microcomputers, and SCSI peripherals. Did prototype (software) design and development of a SCSI Host Adapter and a disk server board. Conducted data rate performance evaluations on a number of contending architectural options during our product planning. Isolated in our product line the locations of bottlenecks over our internal GPIB (IEEE 488) bus. Lead engineer in PC-mainframe communications. Project leader for developing Unix software to communicate with IBM mainframe applications over SNA (3270 and LU 6.2) and BSC links. Wrote a Unix 3270 device driver and user interface libraries.

Helped develop the Gemdos operating system. Responsibilities were the BIOS for the development machines (Lisa and VME-10) and I/O control. Designed and wrote symbolic, assembly-level debuggers for the iAPX286 and MC68000 chips (Concurrent DOS O/S). Debuggers consisted of assembler, disassembler, extensive windowing capabilities, and a large number of search, display, and execution modes. Enhanced Assemblers. Conducted studies: how best to port CBASIC compiler to support Kanji and a unique Japanese environment and discovered a solution for running MS-DOS iAPX86 programs in the iAPX286's protected mode.
