Cyber-security consulting for the MicroSystems Automation Group (MSAG). Working on a contract to create a security risk analysis process for the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that integrates with existing civil aviation safety processes, procedures, and laws. The immediate goal of this process is to create security analysis data that will assist the FAA to define policy to safely secure commercial aircraft. This contract ends in mid-June. I am available to do other cyber-security consulting work after that.

2011-2014: Technical Fellow in Boeing’s IT Information Security organization. Made security architectures and designs to defend Boeing against cyber attack. Also performed Information Assurance (IA; security) analysis; project/program security consulting; and security reviews of programs.Technical Integrator for Boeing’s Security Information and Event Management System (SIEM). Collaborated in multiple security pilots of a US government entity. Worked issues related to device identity and integrity; identity management and federation; and compound claims and distributed access management. Helped found the Cybersecurity Research Alliance (CSRA). Represented Boeing to several national and international cyber security communities (e.g., TSCP, TCG, various US government).1998-2011: Applied research in data communications and cyber security, primarily researching the overlap between data communications and security. Did program designs and was the technical lead in the data communications and/or security/IA domains for 12+ major military programs. Worked all aspects of security with a particular emphasis on communications security (COMSEC). Also did security consulting to Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Also volunteered to rescue 5+ failing projects or programs. Researched issues and mechanisms to secure safety systems (e.g., commercial airplanes, factories, power grids, etc.).In 2009 was a co-chair of the US Government’s (OSTP and NITRD) National Cyber Leap Year Summit, providing leadership in digital provenance.In 2006 I was the Principal Investigator for a contract with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to recommend extensions to FAA certification processes and procedures to address onboard security and safety issues arising from emerging highly networked airplane environments. This included writing two books found on the FAA’s website as well as speaking at FAA conferences.

Designed and built Microsoft's secure web environment which supported Microsoft’s Electronic Commerce relationships with Microsoft's ~80K business partners (e.g., OEMs, ARs, DSPs, SSBs, etc) and conveyed a significant percentage of Microsoft’s total corporate revenue.Also was a program manager in building Microsoft's NetShow (Media Server) product (i.e., distributed multimedia presentation/broadcast system). Responsible for the Advanced Streaming Format (ASFv1 and ASF) multimedia file format, which allegedly was a cornerstone of Microsoft’s corporate multimedia strategy. Led the definition of ASF via creating and leading an international consortia involving more than 180 companies and institutions within the context of severe contractual constraints. Secondary responsibilities included representing NetShow’s interests at the IETF and ISO (MPEG-4) and indirectly at the SMPTE and the EBU standards bodies

1) Boeing's chief data communications architect. Migrated 22 different protocol systems to all use TCP/IP protocols, thereby creating the first corporate enterprise network within any Fortune 2000 company. This also introduced the need for Enterprise Security, which I initially began leading. In order to create formal business cases to support network integration, I invented a mechanism to describe computing architectures. I then systematically described the computer architectures of Boeing's strategic line of business (LOB) applications, formally documenting for the first time the deployed computing diversity within Boeing and how it was used. This lengthy study (294 pages) was widely used by Boeing’s application program managers and computing architects to plot the evolution and integration of 2000 of Boeing's most important (line-of-business) applications. It also established a strong business rationale to encourage executives to invest in my network design proposals.2) Boeing’s representative to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) since 1992. Sought to resolve vexatious network problems confronting Boeing (e.g., DNS scalability) as well as to transfer information and Internet technologies into Boeing. Member of the IESG’s IPng Directorate, which led the creation of IPv6.3) Principal in enhancing Boeing’s corporate network security: external security firewalls, internal access management, and internal single sign-on capability. Principal also in Boeing’s corporate Electronic Commerce initiative.4) Boeing’s representative to influence the data communication products of specific computer vendors who were building products which were deemed to be strategic to Boeing, primarily IBM (Token Ring, MPTN) and Sun Microsystems (NFSv3). Also worked major aeronautical network issues within national and international data communications consortia and standards bodies.

Member of a small team which did the product design for the second generation of AT&T Conversant Systems products (PBX and PBX adjunct). Lead engineer for developing a SCSI bus interface which linked PBXs, microcomputers, and SCSI peripherals. Did prototype (software) design and development of a SCSI Host Adapter and a disk server board. Conducted data rate performance evaluations on a number of contending architectural options during our product planning. Isolated in our product line the locations of bottlenecks over our internal GPIB (IEEE 488) bus. Lead engineer in PC-mainframe communications. Project leader for developing Unix software to communicate with IBM mainframe applications over SNA (3270 and LU 6.2) and BSC links. Wrote a Unix 3270 device driver and user interface libraries.

Helped develop the Gemdos operating system. Responsibilities were the BIOS for the development machines (Lisa and VME-10) and I/O control. Designed and wrote symbolic, assembly-level debuggers for the iAPX286 and MC68000 chips (Concurrent DOS O/S). Debuggers consisted of assembler, disassembler, extensive windowing capabilities, and a large number of search, display, and execution modes. Enhanced Assemblers. Conducted studies: how best to port CBASIC compiler to support Kanji and a unique Japanese environment and discovered a solution for running MS-DOS iAPX86 programs in the iAPX286's protected mode.

Enhanced system utilities for iAPX86-based Victor products (MS-DOS O/S). Utilities included: CP/M emulator, Editor to configure character sets, Editor to configure keyboards, Audio Toolkit, Graphics Toolkit, Hard Disk Toolkit, floppy disk formatting program and floppy disk copying programs.
