Emery is the leading North American producer of chemical products derived from triglyceride feedstocks. We made commodity glycerin and fatty acids for a wide variety of end uses such as personal care, synthetic, animal nutrition among others. Additionally, a growing R & D focus during my tenure was spent on the smaller though highly profitable area of specialty chemicals, where we targeted agricultural players, biolubricants manufacturers, plastic extruders, and invented novel polyester polyols for the polyurethanes industry. My team focused on sustainable technology development with two to five year horizon projects for our customers.We succeeded in these efforts by: - Leveraging field sales input and strategic marketing insights to properly weigh NPV of various competing priorities; - Developing a halogen free flame retardant package for use in the foam products; - Formulating new foam products developed in-house based upon renewable carbon containing NOPs; and - Implementing process improvements that maximized on-line efficiencies (higher yields, less spreads across buns) to optimize overall project/product profitability.

Responsibilities included organizing and initiating the research and development in a start-up company dedicated to the development of new soy-based products for the polyurethane industry. We derived new processes, products, and filed patents as we modified soybean oil into a suitable raw material for use in all areas of polyurethanes - flexible molded foams, rigid spray foams, spray elastomers, formulated systems, composites, and as a natural oil polyol itself.
