Contributed to the development of the NTENT Search Engine by working on the main backend service called QAS (Query Answering System). Involved in design, implementation, and maintenance including query parsing, ontology matching and disambiguation. Implemented in C/C++, Lua, Python, and SPARQL. Deployed through configurable services running in daemontools or Kubernetes. Details:- Ontology: Blend of in-house ontology and Wikidata items. Took charge of match engine, disambiguation, ranking. Added features, improvements, and fixes.- Wikidata items: Monthly build and patch of Wikidata artifacts using WDQS mirror. Implemented and enhanced vandalism checking and cleanup.- Business Database: Find matching business names for query and when to show in user interface (UI). Installed new databases snapshots every six weeks. Involved in development of web-scale text search engine and other search and retrieval systems (text, video, images):- Excalibur Search (Web-scale search (4 Billion documents in 2005)): A group of 4 of us founded the Excalibur Search engine by designing and implementing a web crawler, indexer, shard server and query front end pipeline. Massively parallelized, with large-scale search running in data centers. My work: indexer, language detection, disambiguation, search ranking. Implemented in C/C++ on Linux PCs, massively parallelized, using daemontools for 24/7 availability.- RetrievalWare (Text search): Bring semantics into the keyword-matching product. Taxonomyand classification. Implemented in Java.- Screening Room (A video asset management system performing video capture for import, storage in SQL database, then process acquired media for scene search and video editing): Edit client for video editing and indexing (eg finding transitions), GUI. Implemented in C/C++ (ActiveX, DirectShow from Microsoft) in Windows, Visual Basic for calling filter graphs and other components, and for GUI.- Electronic Filing System (EFS, “the paperless office”, scan or import documents into EFS, search, print, export): Designed and implemented file storage, transaction integrity, compression in C/C++ on various flavors of UNIX and Windows. GUI implemented in XWindows. Integrated with company’s search technology.- Kanji Character Recognition (demo): Scan a sheet of paper with Kanji characters, find bounding box for each, create tuples from strokes, train/query neural network. My work: All, implemented in C on DEC Ultrix and VAX/VMS, using XWindows for display.
