I provide strategic advice to clients in three principal areas: legal transformation, corporate governance, and investigations/compliance. Legal Transformation: I advise leading corporate legal teams and top tier global law firms as they modernize and transform. I founded and lead KPMG's Legal Operations Transformation Services (LOTS) Advisory team in the US. General counsel frequently praise my observations and analysis about their legal teams and processes, and credit the strategic insights I provide with significant improvements in their teams' performance. As an experienced lawyer, I understand what legal teams need in order to be effective, and I have translated and adapted business innovations in ways that lawyers support and adopt. A big part of what I do involves helping legal teams better manage risk, break down silos, and increase collaboration with their business clients. My legal transformation clients range from law departments of Fortune 100 companies with hundreds of attorneys around the globe to start-ups with only a few lawyers. I have counseled legal teams in sectors including financial services, health care, life sciences, technology, consumer/retail, and others. I also serve as a strategic advisor to three of the top ten law firms in America, as measured by revenue (AmLaw 10). Corporate Governance; In addition to legal department strategy and operations advice, I counsel clients regarding corporate governance, corporate secretarial functions, and board relations. These engagements involve helping clients better manage interactions with their boards, streamline board processes, and improve corporate secretary effectiveness. Investigations & Compliance: Finally, I work closely with clients on issues of ethics, compliance, and investigations. I advise compliance teams on program design, risk identification/mitigation, and compliance effectiveness. I lead corporate investigations regarding business misconduct including alleged fraud, waste, bribery and corruption, insider trading, and other violations. My investigations have covered North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and I have appeared many times for clients before the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Although KPMG does not provide legal advice in the US, my background as a lawyer helps our KPMG investigation teams more effectively partner with the legal and compliance departments of our clients so they can successfully navigate these difficult challenges and ultimately improve business performance.
