The Director of Community Medicine shall expand and maintain the Department of Community Medicine. He/she shall oversee and ensure that evidence-based methods and practices in the community are adhered to based on national and international scientific standards, and that all messaging, programming, and outreach activities are consistent. Additionally, the Director of Community Medicine shall attend, represent and expand Access Health Louisiana's community footprint in issues of Public Health Policy and Health Governance and assist with issues of Government Affairs, on all levels (local, state, national and international).

LDH Health Promotion AmbassadorsReducing health disparities and supporting health equity requires efforts that empower individuals and communities. Empowerment can happen in many ways. Two of the most important ways it happens is through building people’s abilities - within their community - to a) share information and b) support the learning of new skills.The Office of Community Partnerships and Health Equity (OCPHE) is working to promote health equity by building individual and community capacity through the development of its LDH Health Promotion Ambassadors initiative. This initiative:Identifies community gatekeepers and stakeholders to become Ambassadors – individuals who have expressed an interest (to OCPHE) in providing health promotion education/resources in their communityBuild Ambassador’s competencies to a) share information and b) support the learning of new skillsAmbassador’s health promotion competencies are built via OCPHE’s Ambassador Tele-orientation, other Tele-trainings, and resourcesLDH Health Promotion Ambassadors serve as points of contact who aid LDH in distributing vital information to people, populations, and communities, especially those that are most vulnerable. Presently, LDH Health Promotion Ambassadors are focused on COVID-19.

Opened in 2009, Xavier University of Louisiana reinforced its commitment to its initiatives focusing on minority health disparities and diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The goal of the center, located next to the Wal-Mart store at 5110 Jefferson Hwy. in Harahan, is to improve the health of the community by providing education, medication therapy management and screening services to those with Diabetes-related health care needs in the Greater New Orleans area.

Our work with the SLVHCS - a significant focus of Project Legacy - will assist with the design and implementation of a new healthcare delivery system that will replace the current VA Health Care System that was damaged by flooding from Hurricane Katrina. Completed the CDC Work@Health Train-the-Trainer program in May 2014. Work@Health® Train-the-Trainer (certified) training will provide employers and other participants with the knowledge and tools to train employers how to promote good health in their work places. Participants will be able to use the information to prevent or reduce chronic illness and disability, and improve productivity and employer competitiveness of employers participating in this training program. Training is for individuals and organizations who have a strong interest in workplace health and building capacity among employers in their community. The curriculum is delivered through five core modules and training lab.

WHAT’S A LEAGUE CYCLING INSTRUCTOR?League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) are certified to teach the Smart Cycling classes to children as well as adults. Their goal is to help people feel more secure about getting on a bike, to create a mindset that bikes are treated as a vehicle, and to ensure that people on bikes know how to ride safely and legally. LCIs are members of the League and have completed an intense 3-day seminar training. Our certified instructors are active within the bicycling community and are covered by the League’s liability insurance.
