About Eric H. Tornfelt, Ed.D.

Dr. Eric H. Tornfelt completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Furman University in 2003. He began his teaching career in the fall of 2004 at Sun Valley High School in Union County, NC. During his time at Sun Valley, Dr. Tornfelt taught Social Studies and coached the Men’s Varsity Golf Team. In 2007, Dr. Tornfelt joined the inaugural faculty at Mallard Creek High School. While at Mallard Creek, Dr. Tornfelt served on the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools literacy design collaborative team. He also participated in grant work from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on developing and using literacy strategies in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. In 2013, Dr. Tornfelt co-led a strategic task force as a part of the development of Superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison’s strategic plan The Way Forward.Dr. Tornfelt was honored as Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Teacher of the year in 2012. Dr. Tornfelt was named Assistant Principal at the nationally recognized Piedmont Middle School in April 2013. As a part of his role, Dr. Tornfelt was responsible for collaborating and communicating with parents, teachers, and other stakeholders to foster an exceptional IB learning experience for each student and achieve strategic goals outlined in the district and school vision and mission. Dr. Tornfelt joined the administrative team at Garinger High School in July 2015 as a part of the Beacon school turnaround initiative. As a part of his work at Garinger, Dr. Tornfelt improved the proficiency rates of Biology End of Course (EOC) exams and managed and implemented projects related to teacher evaluations, beginning teachers' professional development, school security, and athletics. In 2018, Dr. Tornfelt had the opportunity to join the Administrative Team at Sedgefield Middle School where he is currently the Assistant Principal.Dr. Tornfelt completed his Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Wingate University in 2017. Dr. Tornfelt is the author of "The Crumbling Schoolhouse: A Candid View of American Education." (2022)
