About Eric Halterman

Growing up, I found reading to be the most egregious waste of time. I always wondered what the point of reading was when movies and TV exist. When I went to college, I majored in English (only because I enjoyed writing) and had my eyes opened to all the different types of literature out there. More importantly, I learned how to think about literature in a greater scope than just, "what happened in Chapter 3?" Now, I read everyday. This not only changed how I viewed reading, but it also instilled in me a love of learning and discovery. This newly-discovered passion propelled me into the teaching field.For the first few years, I was in love with it. I still think back fondly of my first school and my first groups of students. Even if some of their names escape me these 8 years later, I can still remember how I felt being with them and watching them grow into mature, intelligent, determined people. Hearing that some of them have gone off to law school, or are in graduate programs now brings me joy that I really can't put in words. Unfortunately, things started to change the past few years, and I became burned out with the classroom teaching environment. I knew it was time to make a change, but I still wanted to stay in education, which is how I discovered Instructional Design. Although classroom teaching and ID are different careers with different audiences, the core principles are the same: people can and should learn, and we need to create an environment that enables them to do just that. I've always been interested in the psychology of how we learn, and I love the challenge of creating engaging learning experiences; turning something boring into something exciting is difficult, but I it's a skill I want to keep developing.What I offer is true passion for learning and helping others improve their skills. I find researching new strategies, philosophies, and technology exciting. I hate busy work and strive to make sure my learners do not have to suffer through it or worse, a presentation that "could have been an email." I learn new technology quickly and love sharing ideas with my colleagues. More importantly, I am adamant in my learner-centered approach, and I work to understand who they are and what their needs are.Please don't hesitate to reach out to me, especially if you are in need of a good book to read!
