I directed a joint technology-development program and managed customer engagement with a startup on printing solar devices using rollable glass. With an international, interdisciplinary staff of 10+ and a budget over $3 million, we went from customer needs to concept to prototype and IP capture, demonstrating a design using glass that is >10X thinner, offers best-in-class weight, and reduces system cost by 10%, compared to existing glass solar modules. Our innovation results and business case elevated the initiative from "research" to new-market opportunity presented to the Board of Directors. Along the way, I received awards for innovation and leadership.

I led an R&D program on building, deploying, and managing digital tools to help internal staff accelerate innovation through informatics. Inheriting a data collection, management, and visualization initiative, I transformed the program by • Bringing together siloed teams with a shared vision, value proposition, and strategy • Introducing user-experience (UX) as a core principle and leading with user-centered design, • Expanding scope to include machine learning and user recommendations • Instituting a delivery model consistent with modern software development, • Establishing and managing partnerships to address gaps in internal software value chain.Together, we gained buy-in from the user community, stakeholders and management, growing the program from a staff of 10 to 20+ and the budget from $4 million to $10 million. We delivered a >20X increase in FAIR data (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) across internal labs and external data sources, improved tool usage across multiple metrics e.g. active-user growth exceeding 50%, and documented value through UX outcomes. Highlighting the strategic importance of the Program, we were featured on the annual "Corporate 1-pager" 2 years running.

Selected as innovation lead for connected vehicles and traffic management in support of $200 million transportation business expansion. I built and directed team of 8 with a budget of $2 million focused on machine-learning for improving safety and mobility. Collaborating with my business partner, I architected a "smart" construction-zone offering, iterated the concept with potential customers, and gained management buy-in. On the technical side, my team developed and demonstrated proof-of-concept for a portable system that fused video and vehicle data to predict travel time and queue length, used computer vision to detect hazards, and broadcasted alerts to construction workers and drivers.

I directed an Education program with 4 projects and a staff of 15 on creating data-driven digital applications to personalize learning. Working with a "customer-led innovation" mindset, I established and managed a personal-learning initiative with Vista Unified School District in Vista, CA. Together, we designed a system for teachers that curated student work and provided learner-specific analytics and recommendations. Vista was awarded a $10 million grant from the XQ Super School Project to build the system.Along the way, I served as a trusted advisor on the superintendent's staff, gave invited talks at Vista events and at EdLab (Columbia University). On the Xerox side, I developed and managed an IP portfolio where we generated 20+ patent applications.

I was co-founder of an internal startup with a staff of 12 aiming to grow the Xerox K-12 Business by creating data-driven applications for personalized learning. We were awarded $3+ million to commercialize Ignite, a web-based system for evaluating student work, managing data, and generating personal analytics.The work led to the formation of Ignite Business. I worked alongside the managing director to build the business team, and I partnered with Xerox Sales to create the sales channel through an existing K-12 print-services network. I represented Ignite in 45+ engagements with school districts. After launch, Ignite was recognized as a Computerworld Honors Laureate. The product was bundled with print services and credited with $30+ million in sales. To share our educator-centric approach to product design, I gave an invited talk at South by Southwest EDU.

I led a 7-member interdisciplinary team on building an interactive prognostics and health management (PHM) system for a fleet of printing devices embedded in a population of device users and service providers. We gained buy-in from field service and business partners by leading with user-centered design backed by ethnographic studies and by quantifying the PHM impact for the device population.I architected our Bayesian approach and guided development of a PHM engine that fused machine data, images, and user input to detect faults, predict incipient failures, and provided service recommendations. To support commercial software development, I established and managed an external partnership. Together, we went from business need to proof-of-concept demonstration. I co-authored 10 patents.
