I am currently an Associate Professor of Public Policy at Rochester Institute of Technology, where I teach a variety of courses, mostly relating to quantitative policy analysis. My research is focused on energy policy, particularly the opportunities and challenges associated with new technologies such as energy storage, renewables, electric vehicles, and efficiency. I also work with companies in the electricity sector to help them better understand the potential markets and revenue sources for their products or projects. My current research is a blend of technical and economic policy analysis, focused on practical methods to accommodate increasing amounts of wind power into the electrical grid and determining what role (if any) energy storage should have in this effort. This research is inherently interdisciplinary and I am accustomed to examining the economic, technical, and policy aspects of energy issues. I am also doing some research into the energy consumption of consumer electronics, which is an increasingly significant fraction of residential electricity consumption.I spent 6 years working for the US Government as a Project Management Engineer and have experience leading diverse teams and finding creative solutions to interesting problems. I am very active in the US Association for Energy Economics, an organization that provides an excellent point of interface between academia and the energy industry.I like finding the solutions to important real world problems, challenging myself, and doing something different every day.I can be contacted at eshgpt@rit.eduSpecialties: Energy Policy, Energy Storage, Wind Power, Electrical Grid Modeling, Video Game Industry, Project Management, Polymer Chemistry

Will International ChairUniversity Of Lille 1 Sciences And Technology Jun 2023 - PresentLille, Hauts-De-France, FranceThe WILL International Chair at the University of Lille allows me to work with a team of technical (L2EP: Laboratoire d’électrotechnique et d’électronique de puissance) and social science (TVES - Territoires, villes, environnement & société) experts to study the techno-economic possibilities for second life EV batteries in the context of changing technology, behaviors, and demands. This project is supported by France 2030 and allows me to be in Lille working directly with the team for 2-4 months each year. -
Visiting ResearcherUniversity Of Lille 1 Sciences And Technology Jun 2019 - Dec 2020Lille, Hauts-De-France, FranceIn an extended sabbatical with the Laboratoire d'électrotechnique et d'électronique de puissance (L2EP) of the University of Lille, I worked with engineering-focused teams on techno-economic analysis of electric vehicle infrastructure. -
Energy Systems AnalystAquion Energy Jun 2012 - Apr 2014Greater Pittsburgh AreaI worked with Aquion Energy to construct engineering-economic models of batteries in off- and on-grid energy systems. We used these models to assess the value of energy storage for various applications, and to generally support marketing and design decisions with the applicable results.

Phd Candidate And ResearcherCarnegie Mellon University Sep 2008 - Aug 2012At Carnegie Mellon, I researched grid-level energy storage and wind integration using engineering-economic models as part of the Carnegie Mellon Electricity Industry Center. The rapid deployment of energy storage and the increasingly significant amount of variability introduced by new wind generation will be two of the most important and interesting changes to electricity grids over the next few decades. Examining how these technologies affect the operation of electricity grids and which policies are "best" will be critical for future integration, and my research contributed to the growing body of knowledge on these issues. -
