I’m a recovering English teacher, enamored of words, smitten by story. Even so, the most creative, rewarding outlets for me have come from building new lines of business in learning and communications. And the possibilities for using words and telling stories through online communications media really excite me. I plied my trade as an academic first. There I learned the discipline to finish big projects, developed intellectual independence, and gained confidence that I could learn or teach whatever I had to.Later in organizations, I built operational and leadership skills growing a series of vaguely defined executive aspirations to teach or persuade people into coherent, scalable operations that supported strategic interests and were cash-positive.I’ve grown ever-more fascinated with the changing, surprising ways that new communications technologies could help learning and communications projects succeed. New forms of media are driving new uses of language to reach newly available audiences. Not a news flash, but we’re all grappling with it, successfully or not.At Start Engineering, we tell stories about learning and career opportunities in STEM fields to make them accessible and exciting for K-12 audiences of all kinds. Our customers include colleges and universities, companies and foundations, school districts and non-profits. We’re mostly B2B, but our retail side is growing, too.I write books and develop learning content, do the blog, plot content and digital strategy, engage people through social media, conduct field research, and work to position us for collaborative opportunities. I love telling our story, in print or in person.
