I worked on global projects and was responsible for the architecture direction of the content management portfolio (FileNet) at Shell. This was a varied and challenging role that required flexibility.  Projects covered downstream application, including upgrades/implementations for five completely different ERP technologies: SAP ECC/BW, JDE E1, SAP ByDesign Cloud, JDE World, and Entero.  A good understanding of document archiving and inbound document processing was also required to provide architecture direction for FileNet and the associated connected applications. The third area I covered was miscellaneous projects for old applications that have minimal documentation.  This required 'application archaeologist' investigative skills and the ability to quickly create solution designs. Most memorable Day #1: Meeting the virtual architecture team after working remotely for two years. It was quite an experience to finally link the voice and personality to a physical presence. Most memorable Day #2: The go live day for the JDE Argentina project, which involved upgrading the ERP version and database, replacing AIX hardware, changing realtime interfaces, upgrading network, moving from servers in Buenos Aries to Amsterdam, and transporting 2TB of ERP data on a portable NAS by airline to the new location. This was a very intense, immersive, and successful project. Most memorable Day #3: The go live day for the FileNet storage and DR project. This migrated 260 million ERP documents from hundreds of optical platters on jukeboxes to magnetic WORM storage, virtualized servers, and a full DR environment.
  • Shell Canada
    Solution Architect
    Shell Canada Jan 2005 - Oct 2009
    Calgary, Canada Area
I moved from IBM to Shell primarily to spend more time with my family, eliminate the weekly flying to customers, and work locally with a great team. Shell Canada eBusiness team did full end to end application design and support for the upstream and downstream Canada business. I led the eBusiness enhancements, worked on portal applications, and designed other web applications. This role ended when Royal Dutch Shell bought out Shell Canada and began converting Canada to global applications. Most memorable day #1: Walking 3 blocks to work after 4 years of flights to IBM customers and virtual working, then stepping back in time to private offices and f2f communication. Most memorable day #2: Leading developer meetings and having all eyes pivot to me whenever the USA was discussed (No, I don't talk to George Bush daily). Learning about a new culture and new ways of working was a refreshing experience. Most memorable day #3: Working with retail users on an end to end retail station solution for Shell Canada. This was a great chance to work though the business problems, create prototype screens, build with new technology, plan the deployment, and assist on support.
  • Ibm
    Ecommerce Consultant
    Ibm Jun 1999 - Dec 2004
    Us, Canada, Uk
I was lead developer and architect on many WebSphere Commerce implementations. After years of developing prototypes and handing them of to IBM services to implement, I finally decided to really DO! For 5 years, I worked in the US, Canada, and even UK on eCommerce website development. The sites were highly integrated to mainframe order systems, tax software, and credit card processors. Most memorable day #1: Supporting the newly developed Victoria's Secret website in 1999 and learning that The Limited was going to advertise during the Super Bowl. What a scramble to prepare for the wall of traffic that was to hit! Most memorable day #2: Working with the IBM team in London for 5 months to develop the Waitrose online order grocery website. This was an amazing mentoring opportunity and a chance to be immersed in another culture. The day? The final day when I left the project and had such great feedback from the team! Most memorable day #3: Working on the Williams-Sonoma project and alternating between home office, IBM Vancouver Center, and WS in San Francisco. Serving as unofficial US-Canada liaison and explaining to the US team that yes, Canada Thanksgiving is in OCTOBER, and no, the Vancouver team will not work the weekend. Most memorable day : Meeting my future wife at a project in Calgary. :)
  • Ibm
    Solution Designer And Architect
    Ibm Dec 1993 - Jun 1999
    Midwest
This was the most exciting and innovative time in my career.I had the opportunity to work with an incredible un-IBM team of misfits and visionaries in the mid 90s that ditched the traditional suits, dove into new technology, and created new business solutions by working closely with customers and understanding their business processes. One of the most exciting project was the Nationwide Insurance 'office of the future', which we did with the Hawthorne/Yorktown IBM research division (home of IBM Watson). I also created scripted presentations based my personal client-server prototypes and shared this with the global IBM client-server practice. I developed 20+ visioning prototypes that actually worked against mainframes, midrange, DBs, image systems, fax, and multimedia components. Most memorable Day #1: Presenting my prototypes in Brussels at the IBM ERP conference and being voted top presenter. Also, hearing myself translated into multiple languages while I was presenting and feeling my brain split into three thought processes: presenting, watching the audience, and listening to the translations. Most memorable Day #2: Developing a complex client server call center prototype for Huntington Banks that integrated ERP, Imaging, Fax, Telephony, and Database. I took an all-nighter to complete the final prototype and included coding blind while the mainframe was down from 3-6am. I finished as my final build as coworker was doing the kickoff to the audience, and the live demo was great! Most memorable day #3:Leading development of a C++ call center app for Ford Primus to increase lease renewal, and waking up every 30 minutes at night to the beep when the compile finished. We demoed a live call to a VP, who heard the customer go from hating the dealer to agreeing to come back to another Ford dealer to test drive a new vehicle.
  • Ibm
    Systems Engineer
    Ibm Jul 1987 - Dec 1993
    Mansfield, Ohio And Columbus, Ohio
Support of PCs, networks, OS/2 for manufacturing businesses in the mid-Ohio area. This was a chance to be more technical and work with firms on rollouts of networks and OS/2.We know where this ends. For me it was seeing Windows 3, and realizing that Bill Gates just ###### the IBM partnership. In spite of this challenge, we were able to work with manufacturing clients to create bottling line monitoring systems (Borden), engine head torque tracking (Honda), baby formula mixing multimedia training (Abbott Labs), and other solutions that were used for years. Most memorable day #1: Travelling to Honda Ohio to support IT there and seeing many of my hometown classmates working there. Most memorable day #2: Seeing Windows 3 and knowing that my OS2 knowledge was worthless. It was time to reinvent myself and move on.
