My grandfather was the first person in our family to come to the United States. In 1955, he left his wife and three young kids to establish a better life in America. His first job was as a busboy and dishwasher in a Chinese-American restaurant in Salem, Oregon. He spent the next seven years alone, learning English, going to night school and sending money back home to his family.In 1962, he was able to bring his wife and three kids, including my dad, over to the States. However, grandpa would have to wait another 16 years before he realized his American dream, opening a restaurant called Dragon Garden.Without proper planning, dreams are nothing more than wistful fantasies. But when you pursue your goals with diligence, hard work and passion, they can become a reality.Dreams are the reason I quit a successful career in public relations. After nearly 20 years in communications, I was burnt out and looking for deeper professional meaning.
