About Eric Leas
I am an assistant professor at the University of California, San Diego by way of a fellowship at Stanford Medical School. My work explores how modern analytical methods and data streams can improve our understanding of public health and inform health policy. A primary topic area has been substance use, and this has been supported by The US Food and Drug Administration, The US National Institute on Drug Abuse, The California Tobacco-ReIated Disease Research Program and others. I am the Principal Investigator of The Tobacco E-commerce Lab where we study online sales practices. CurrentMy work breaks into 4 parts:1) Research. My research explores how modern analytical methods and data streams can improve our understanding of public health and inform health policy, with a bent toward substance use policy. 2) Teaching. I teach a graduate level course called "The Internet as Data" that unpacks the techniques we use in The Tobacco E-Commerce Lab to produce information to support regulators and law enforcement. 3) University service. I mentor students, residents, postdocs, and staff. I am also on the grand rounds, MPH admissions, and several other committees at the school and in our community. 4) Public service. I frequently do outreach activity with the goal of better informing consumers about new technologies and 'intoxicating' products that can be legally sold in the United States. I am also a Scientific Advisor to the US Community Preventive Services Task Force on projects related to youth substance use prevention.
