I’ve created an incubator for talent within Cisco Canada. I bring in people with diverse talent, and then mentor their growth and training to help them find the right path for their careers. Sometimes that means people move into leadership roles within my team. It also sometimes means they move on and out of my team, and I take pride in that as well. I love to see people succeed, and when I know I may have played a part in facilitating their career growth, it makes me very proud. I started my career in technology as a technician, and later, I programmed equipment before I ever got into sales. Those early years are critical to who I am as a sales manager and a leader today. That basic, hands-on understanding of what we are explaining and selling to customers is valuable knowledge I bring to the table. It builds trust. I encourage my team members to learn all they can, not only from their seniors, but from colleagues and from people outside their areas of expertise. My team is the reason I’m here. If you hire well and take care of your team, you can love the people you work with. And I love the people I work with.The technology space is changing and growing quickly. To survive and thrive in this market, we have to be willing to reinvent ourselves. I hire people who are both talented and flexible. Some accomplishments from this period include: • Closing FY2005 at 130% of quota, with more than 45 new local customers, including Grant Thorton, CCQ, Iron Ore, and Stream. It was the first time in five years that the Eastern branch exceeded its quota.• Increasing revenue in Eastern Canada by 50% over the previous two years • Becoming an Avaya Canada candidate for the international Leadership award in 2004 and 2005• Increasing revenue from $200,000 to nearly $5 million CAD in the Quebec City territory in 2001• Helping Lucent’s East region become the only region in Canada to exceed 100% of its quota in 1999• Helping Lucent become the #1 company in the call center market• Receiving invitations to Avaya’s President’s Club for FY2002 and FY2003 for finishing at over 135% of plan each year.
