About Eric Leshinsky

I am a planner and urban designer who has worked on a broad range of projects at the intersections of architecture, planning, art, and ecology. My career began in 1998 doing conservation work for the Trust for Public Land within the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. Following a Masters Degree in Architecture in 2006, I worked on institutional buildings and large urban scale master planning initiatives within architectural practices in Houston and Baltimore. In 2010, I co-founded Shrimp Boat Projects, an initiative focused on studying, promoting, and learning from the culture and ecology of the Galveston Bay area of Texas, initially funded through an artist residency with the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for Interdisciplinary Arts at the University of Houston. The project fundamentally changed my practice and shifted my attention from architecture to landscape, ecology, and planning. Following three years as a commercial shrimper on Galveston Bay, I joined landscape architecture and planning practices in Houston and Austin as a Senior Designer and Planner where I worked nationally on projects ranging from neighborhood plans and corridor studies to park system plans and regional plans. In 2020, after nearly 25 years of living elsewhere, I returned to my hometown of Annapolis, MD, to be the Chief of Comprehensive Planning for the City of Annapolis.In addition to my work as a planner, I have developed numerous site-specific public art projects in various cities, I have served as adjunct faculty at several university-level design and planning programs, and I currently serve on the Board of Directors at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, MD.
