Be-A80 & C-402 First OfficerUniversal Airways Jan 1979 - May 1979Houston, Texas, UsUniversal Weather had a Part 135 certificate as a commuter airline with scheduled passenger flights in Texas & Louisiana.Duties as FO included preflight inspections, greeting passengers, computation of weight & balance, etc. Initial position for Universal Airways, prior to C-402 First Officer, was as a flight follower. Received phone messages from station agents throughout the airline system, with each flight’s in & out times, along with the passenger count. These would be entered into a log. Each aircraft was expected to fly certain routes & flight numbers in a sequence. Each aircraft & route was depicted on a large plastic strip, that could be slid horizontally on a wall, to adjust the expected departure & arrival times. Some days, the flights would be delayed & I had to facilitate the best solution to allocate the available aircraft to maximize passenger revenue, while maintaining, as much as possible, the time schedule. This obviously required some mental gymnastics, so that proper attention was given to the details, while maintaining the overall view of the big picture.NOTE: The Airline no longer exists, but the weather service is still in operation. -
