Profile bio

About Eric Mcghee

I have a love of politics and am a political scientist by training, and I love to help make sense of the big blooming world. I excel at identifying real, robust patterns in data, and I have the statistical toolkit needed to do it. I am also deeply committed to clear, straightforward presentation of results, since the most sophisticated analysis is useless if nobody can understand the actionable conclusions.I have a radically evidence-based philosophy. I believe proper measurement and analysis can lead to important conclusions that even experts may not have expected. Bad measurement and analysis, on the other hand, can lead you completely astray. The key is creative thinking and a restless willingness to question your own conclusions. This approach has helped me make important contributions to the public debate on the issues I cover:--I have developed a metric for measuring partisan bias in redistricting plans that is upending decades of thinking on the subject, and is the basis for an important test case in Wisconsin;--The U.S. House and Senate forecasting models I helped develop for the Washington Post's Election Lab were the first to confidently predict a Republican Senate, and finished among the top two in forecasting accuracy in the 2014 cycle;--My analysis (with Vladimir Kogan of Ohio State University) of the plans drawn by California's new Citizens Redistricting Commission was cited by the state Supreme Court in its key decision on the maps;--My analysis of California's online registration system (which allows residents to register to vote entirely online) convincingly upended the conventional wisdom, which had suggested that this new service increased registration and turnout.I can bring this restless energy to any project and uncover the key insights that decisionmakers need to know.
