Maintained and extended a very complex Java-based telephony stack built on both the XMPP and SIP protocols. I was on call during the lifetime of a product it was built on, GOOG411: a fully automated 1-800 number that allowed anybody to find and call local businesses for free.Helped design and implement a new telephony stack that performed better, scaled easily across multiple machines and better fit the Google network topology.Designed and implemented a C++-based audio switch using the RTP protocol that scaled to thousands of voice calls on standard server hardware.Design and initial implementation work on an ambitious project involving large numbers of arbitrary virtual machines communicating over a virtual (encapsulated) network.

In August of 2001 Be sold its intellectual property assets to Palm, and themajority of the engineering staff, including myself, moved to Palm to adapt ourtechnology to even smaller devices. I continued design and implementation workon the media framework that I had begun at Be.

I joined the Media Team at Be to work on BeIA, a version of the BeOS for internet appliances.During the last few months of Be's existence I designed and began toimplement a streaming media framework to replace the original BeOS Media Kit.Whereas the original Media Kit was aimed at high-end consumer and professionaldesktop systems, my design goals for this framework required it to perform wellon low-end CPUs as found in appliances and portable devices. By the summer of2001 we were able to demonstrate DVD playback using the new framework.
