  Editor and Reporter based in New York specialized in sports.My first job was covering the daily briefings at the U.S. military base in which hundreds of Cuban refugees were detained after fleeing their country. That opened the door for a permanent job as a correspondent in the Panama City bureau and in Costa Rica in the late 1990s. I covered breaking news events all over Latin America, including the Japanese Embassy hostage crisis in Lima; the aftermath of an earthquake in Colombia; and Hurricane Mitch in Honduras, one of the most deadly hurricanes in the Western hemisphere. I was part of a team effort by AP writers, editors and photographers in Mexico and Central America that owned the story, working nonstop for two weeks.I transferred to the Latin American Desk in New York in 2000 and worked as the night supervisor before becoming the sports editor in 2003. I multitask in my position: simultaneous editing, translation, reporting and organizational tasks. I've covered several of the major sports events of the past decade, beginning with the 1998 soccer World Cup in France. I've covered a total of five Olympic Games and four World Cups, plus every single baseball World Series since 2002; Pan American Games, the Track and Field world championships, and Grand Slam tennis tournaments.My main focus now is to enhance coverage of Latin American sports figures in the United States, many of whom make headlines on a regular basis. We have also introduced several new features, including a weekly baseball column of which I am the author.
