About Eric O. Ansah

Experienced applied scientist at the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), UQ. I have a PhD in Geochemistry and Hydrometallurgy from the University of Melbourne and a decade of combined research and operational experience in the mining and energy sectors. Also, I worked for top mining and energy companies like Northern Star Resources, Shell etc. Proven track record in developing innovative heap leaching technology for sustainable metal extraction and mine waste reclamation as part of the BHP’s Think & Act Differently (TAD) Essential Minerals Cohort. Skilled in project management, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Worked with top AI/ML start-ups such as Funartech and as a patent intern in the Chemistry group at Davies Collins Cave (DCC). Passionate about driving sustainable solutions in the mining and energy industries.Presently, I am working on several projects with the State Governments and various mining partners. These projects align with the priorities of the Australian Government and contribute to Australia's overall progress. I apply fundamental concepts of metallurgy, process mineralogy, geochemistry, and geochemical process modelling to characterise and optimize recovery of metals from mine waste and low-grade ores. I am much interested in the efficient water usage during metal and mineral processing, and heap leaching. Because large volumes of water are utilized during mineral processing, hence, there is the need to i) develop efficient water systems for leaching and ii) encourage the utilization of wastewater due to the limited amount of fresh water in places such as Australia. On the other hand, heap leaching is cheap, environmentally friendly, and economically viable for mine waste. Hence, I apply my expertise in Geochemistry and Hydrometallurgy to advance the use of industrial brine for heap leaching and the formation of inert precipitates that locks up the residual heavy metals in the environment and geochemically stabilises the tailing. In my quest to optimize critical metal production, I have become a student of techniques combining machine learning and operations research.
